Vibration testing is applied to a new product to make sure that it will last the rigors of shipping,
handling, and transportation. If you have a product - referred to as the DUT or device under
test?a vibration test will expose any potential flaw that your product may have by exposing it to
shock. Products that are candidates for random vibration testing include cars, military
electronics, and others that are generally subjected to irregular pressure and airflow.
Of course, the common problem is trying to know just how much shock should be applied to the
DUT. Since the amount of pressure applied during shipping, handling, and transportation does
not follow a certain pattern, it would be better to test the product with differing levels of shock.
That is said to be the closest simulation to reality.
Random vibration simulates shock that may differ occasionally, randomly, or even both.
Random vibration testing proves the ability of the DUT to endure the pressurized surroundings
and handling. Also, random vibration testing checks the workmanship quality and reliability of
the test item.
There are several companies that can perform random vibration testing for any product. All they
require is that the product to come in the packaging it will be in when released in the market; that
the equipment it comes with is included; and that the operating manual that comes with and
certain specifications of its make are included.
If the DUT is found to have resonant frequencies or defects through the test, the maker can then
make adjustments to the product. The companies that administered the test could provide a full
analysis on the product and give recommendations on how it could be improved. They can also
administer other tests they think the product needs. Random vibration testing has remained
mostly unchanged since it was launched in early 1950s.
