Using Food

There are answers for arthritis in ancient folk medicine
mostly revolving around diet. New medical discoveries
now prove that some foods aggravate the inflammation

while others alleviate it. In some cases, eliminating
certain foods has known to bring about some relief. But in
most cases, arthritis may be inherited and not really
connected to diet. However, food reactions are highly
individual and one has to find out which food triggers the
inflammation.
Grab The Villian
In order to nab the villain, it would be wise to go on an
elimination diet for a week. Limit your intake to a few
foods like herbal teas, vegetable soups (excluding
tomatoes, capsicum, potatoes, brinjal and green chillies)
and vegetable juices made from carrots, beetroot, spinach
and coriander. If the symptoms improve, add other cereals
like jowar and bajra, pulses and some nuts and seeds.
Avoid all kinds of meats, milk, eggs, wheat, corn, citrus
fruits, cheese, black pepper, mono sodium glutamate
(ajinomoto), food preservatives and refined sugar for the
next two months.
Then get on to all these foods one by one. Never
introduce more than one type of food in 2 days time. If
there is a recurrence of inflammation within 2 days of
consumption, reject that food completely. If you are clear
of symptoms inspite of adding wheat, corn or milk
products, go on adding them one after the other, never at
once. In this way you will be able to identify the allergen.

Anjali Mukerjee Health Total Diet Tips For Arthritis
Turn vegetarian but have lots of fish (steamed, poached or
in a curry). Fish oils contain anti-inflammatory agents.
According to a study by Dr, Joel Kremmer, MD,
Associate professor of medicine, Albany Medical
College, NY moderate amounts of fish benefit arthritic
patients by easing the pain to some extent. He found that
fish oils suppressed the production of leukotriene B-4, an
inflammatory substance that aggravates arthritis
symptoms.
Try a little ginger everyday. It has been used for
thousands of years in Ayurveda. This anti-inflammatory
agent, says Dr. Krishna C Shrivastava, an internationally
acclaimed medical researcher in spices from Odense
University, Denmark, might help you soothe the pain. He
recommends 5gm of ginger to be taken thrice a day. It can
be incorporated in cooking or its juice can be mixed with
water and taken thrice a day.
A low sodium diet helps counteract water retention in
tissues, which can aggravate the swelling that
accompanies arthritis.
Incorporate fresh fruits, vegetables, jowar, bajra, nuts,
seeds and whole pulses in your everyday diet.

Eat at least 2 tablespoons of alsi seed powder everyday.
Rich in Omega-3 fats, it will help in reducing pain.
What to avoid
Vegetable oils should be avoided as too much Omega-6
type of fatty acids may trigger the inflammation. The best
oil to use is olive oil or til oil.
Exclude all meats especially red meat, as it contains
saturated fats, which stimulates inflammatory agents in
the body. It also causes uric acid build-ups and cause joint
inflammation. Some preserved types of meats like cold
cuts, ham and bacon contain preservatives and chemicals
that can trigger arthritic reactions in some.
Cut down on saturated fat by excluding milk products like
cheese, butter, ghee, etc.
Avoid all forms of sugar including colas, soft drinks,
pastries, cakes, mithais, etc. Because sugar can add fuel to
the fire as it strips the body of its essential nutrients. The
artificial sweetener aspartame should be avoided by
people suffering from arthritis.
Make sure you rule out foods that cause you chronic joint.
