Welcome to the new Buffer Salary Sandbox!
3
4
This sandbox was designed for you to model what salaries might look like in Buffer.
5
6
Each Buffer salary comprises 2 key components:
7
1. Base Pay
8
2. Additional Earnings
9
10
The Base Pay for each role is calculated with this simple formula:
11
12
Buffer Benchmark x Experience Factor
13
14
The Buffer Benchmark is calculated using the Market Rate, Role Multiplier, and Cost of Living Multiplier.
15
The Market Rate is based on the San Francisco 50th percentile market rate.
16
The Role Multiplier is an internally-determined factor that adjusts the market rate accordingly. (The exact multipliers we used are recorded in the 'Role Multipliers' tab.)
17
The Cost of Living Multiplier has 3 options: '100', '85', and '75'. (Further detail about which cities fall under each multiplier is available in the 'Cost of Living Multiplier' tab.)
18
The Experience Factor adjusts the Buffer Benchmark based on teammate's experience.
19
(For Engineering and Design roles, the experience factor is set to '1' as the level multiplier has been incorporated into the Market Rate in 'Roles Database'.)

How to use this Sandbox
22
23
Head over to the Salary Sandbox tab. All the cells with blue text are open for editing.
24
Roles have been grouped according to area. Zoom in on the role you have in mind, or change the role in the dropdown menu in Column A; this automatically adjusts the Role Base in Column B.
25
You may adjust the Cost of Living Multiplier and Experience Factor to model what a new Buffer base pay might look like. (Some roles have the Experience Factor incorporated in the role base.)
26
Adjusting the Dependents Grant and Salary Choice to add or remove additional earnings will help you arrive at the total compensation package in Column H.
27
28
The Roles Database tab contains all the Role Base calculations.
29
The frameworks or matrices of each Buffer team are captured in the Framework/Matrix tabs.
30
Cost of Living indices are captured in the Cost of Living Multiplier tab.
