Some additional guidance for folks new to CSAs or to how to work with farmers!
32
Each one of us will need access to food that is grown, harvested, packed and distributed by other hands. In purchasing from local farmers, through a CSA, at a market, or at an on-site stand, chances are good that the only hands that will have touched that produce are those of the farmer, any help in the fields they have, and the consumer. If you are worried about food safety practices, ask! Here are some suggestions to get you started:
33
I am interested in buying produce from you. Can you tell me what your food safety practices are?
34
The answers should include some mix of the following "Anyone who is not feeling well does not handle produce. We wash our hands before and after harvesting, our containers are thoroughly scrubbed out with soap and water and/or bleach or other disinfectants. We pack produce with gloves (or we wash our hands thoroughly). We maintain a 6' distance between ourselves and our customers, except for the process of handing off the produce and a separate process for collecting payment. We are following food safety protocols established by the USDA, the CDC and/or the FDA."
35
Feel free to ask follow-up questions, or to share information like "My father lives with us and I am particularly concerned about his vulnerable health status." The farmer should be responsive to your concerns and speak to them. Local food farmers do this work because they care about human and environmental health and well-being, though they may be more/ less articulate about that commitment!
36
If you feel awkward, that is okay. Acknowledge the awkwardness, none of us have been in this situation before, with so much knowledge and yet so much unknown! The farmer is and should be your partner in supporting your health and well being.
37
Through this pandemic, we are renegotiating our relationships, we are adapting and evolving how we work with other people, how we trust and rely on them, and what we each can expect of each other. None of us know how to do this "correctly" but it is, ultimately, both solid food safety practices and human relationships that will get us through it.
