If you are protesting while seated and someone begins to attack you, cover the back of your neck and your lower back with your arms.

It is best to avoid wearing your contacts at protests, even when you have protective eye wear! (It's safe to wear contacts with protective gear, but it is easy for gear to be broken or removed from you during arrest!)

Write out your ICE (in case of emergency) contact and include notes about required medication or medical problems. Phone numbers of doctors are not a bad idea either.

It is best not to bring prescription medications to the protests. If you do, you’re encouraged to bring the bottle containing your prescription. Police are likely to give you a hard time, but it’s safer to have the bottle your meds came in.

POLICING AND SURVEILLANCE:

Avoid posting and resharing photos that could help the State, white supremacist groups, and employers identify the people protesting antiBlack racism. When possible, blur other people’s faces, tattoos, or other identifiable attributes.

If you do not know how to blur images, this is a brief educational resource on how to do so.

Do not seek to identify the people protesting antiBlack racism, or collaborate with elected officials to identify them. In New York, organizers report being questioned about their support of anti-facism. This is violative of their rights. More here.

Sew or use safety pins to close up open pockets. When possible, do not carry easy to open bags. Police often plant illegal items on protesters so that they can justify arresting them.

For People Visible in Local Organizing: Here is a Twitter thread on deleting your digital footprint. Do not post excessively about what you’re wearing, who you’re going with, etc. to avoid drawing additional attention to yourself.

Many people have recommended using ‘Signal’ to communicate with your comrades. It is more secure than your DMs on Twitter or IG.

This Twitter thread contains "bare minimum stuff" to make your phone and other devices more secure.

The best policy is to watch what you text and to make sure you’re not including your location in any of your social media posts. Turn off your location, espexialy if you travel with many visible, local organizers.

EFFECTIVE SOCIAL MEDIA USAGE DURING PERIODS OF CIVIL UNREST:

Be smart about the social media debates you take on. Facebook fights may not be the way to go! It's a super consistent energy suck. Donate your time to movement work (protests, donating, political education).

Do not share videos and photos of the murder of George Floyd or any other Black person who has been murdered police - or anyone for that matter! These videos are the lynching postcards of our time.

Do the work to unlearn and to fight all of your racist conditioning re: innocence and criminality.

This has bothered quite a few people, but I am still emphasizing that I discourage people from donating their funds right now to Shaun King.

Black non-men primarily have sounded the alarms about how Shaun King moves in social justice spaces. Center Black non-men, who are much more vulnerable! A recent article.

Please prioritize local mutual aid funds and bail projects over well-funded, national organizations, including Color of Change, Change.org, and the BLM Network. Focus your $ on local organizing!
