48 | ANY projects | Yes to both | Lesley Steele | Lestalk2@gmail.com | Brooklyn, NY | New York, USA | Black/African Diaspora | English | Editor | Cinematographer | Established | I'm a documentary filmmaker, editor, producer and ultimately a visual storyteller. Originally a NYC native from the Bronx, I found myself falling in love with video and the moving image while working through archival material and exploring analog audio recorded by my late father. He knew he wouldn't live past my 1st birthday and recorded daily messages on tape that would unknowingly set me on a path of storytelling and filmmaking nearly twenty years later. When I digitized the tapes and heard his voice for the first time as an adult, I realized the significance of preservation, the power of film and how visual and auditory storytelling can serve as a catalyst to tell shareable stories on emerging platforms and change the world. I started my career as a multimedia artist working as a Digital Designer/Producer at Nickelodeon and MTV, designing responsive websites and digital assets including animated banners, gifs, and social assets for international digital campaigns and award shows including the 2016 Kid's Choice Awards and MTV EMA Awards. Since then, I’ve directed, edited & produced numerous independent projects and films. In June 2019, I completed two short docs which I directed, edited and produced in collaboration with UnionDocs. A large part of the cinematography in “By Way of Canarsie” involved shooting 16mm and Super-8 which was integral to the subject matter and my practice as an analog filmmaker. In 2017 I began producing a feature-length investigative documentary titled “NIKKO” detailing the story and events of a convicted serial killer with severe mental-illness on death row in Nebraska. The core of the film addresses the mental health crisis, race and the state and conditions of incarceration in the U.S told through the framework of this very bizarre and extensive case. For three years, I worked as Assistant Professor, and as I prepared myself to apply for a doctorate program, I received an offer to work for a company’s foreign trade department. That opportunity changed my path, and I ended up spending eight years in Operations and Project Management. In 2014 I made a career change and returned to school to study Screenwriting where I learned that I enjoyed helping creatives bring their vision to the screen.
