The group on recombinant DNA was to define the European attitude regarding the responsibility of scientists, as well as the rules to be respected to minimise all risk through experimentation by genetic manipulation. He became a fellow of the Royal Society in 1961 and was an outstanding scientific and academic administrator of his generation, culminating in 12 years as Rector of Imperial College London, followed by five years as Vice-Chancellor of London University.
