1 | Statement of Intent This document was created on May 31, 2020 as a direct response to the lack of Black photographers receiving commissions to cover the protests following the death of George Floyd. Organizers Samantha Xu, Michelle Groskopf, Allison Zaucha, Maggie Shannon, Kate Warren and Haruka Sakaguchi created this directory of self-identified Black photographers to: 1. Distribute as a resource for editors and commissioners 2. Apply pressure on major media outlets to hire more Black photographers in protest coverage 3. Apply pressure on major media outlets to hire more Black photographers in general We have received consent from the photographers – both personally and via the submission form – to be included on this list. We do not assume the role of a jury panel or gatekeepers to this list; we input data for all submissions as long as the participant a) identifies as Black, b) is a photographer and c) is based in the US. While we acknowledge the inherent problems of self-identification and tokenism, we created this list in hopes that it will lead to fair hiring practices and a more inclusive and equitable industry for all. Ultimately, we highly encourage industry gatekeepers to do their own work to find a diverse and inclusive range of photographers, nurture talent, and cultivate ongoing relationships with underrepresented photographers. As the list has grown exponentially since its creation, we have invited multiple collaborators to help maintain this document. Once the spreadsheet has been streamlined for optimal workflow, we plan to entrust this document with a Black-led coalition of editors and photographers to ensure that this list lives far beyond the ongoing protests. If you would like to learn more about how to advocate for underrepresented photographers, please check out DiversifyPhoto, Authority Collective and Color Positive (all linked) – trusted organizations that have been fighting for a more equitable and inclusive photo industry for much longer than we have. |
