5 | EQUITY AND INCLUSION DISCUSSION GUIDELINES (h/t a High School DEI training) Enter the conversations with the goal of leaving them as peers/colleagues who can and will talk further. Set a respectful and empathetic tone, understanding the ELG to be a teaching and learning space. Strive for balance between your feelings, beliefs, thoughts, and your desire to act, in order to be as centered as possible during the conversations. Remain engaged in the discussion (intellectually, emotionally, etc.), even if parts of it are difficult. Be willing to accept discomfort; this is not easy work. Speak your truth, sharing your own thoughts and feelings but not speaking for others. Leave space for other group members to speak for themselves. Listen to understand a variety of perspectives while recognizing that those whose experience includes being from a given marginalized group may have knowledge that those from the relevant dominant group do not share. Expect and accept the reality that there are not always easy solutions and ready agreement in discussions related to equity and inclusion. Allow yourself and others to claim affinities based on the social identity under consideration while recognizing the individuality among people; individuals from similar backgrounds may have different points of view and those of different backgrounds may have similar perspectives. Maintain confidentiality; the observations and questions offered in the discussions groups are not necessarily intended for a broader audience.

8 | From B Corps Co-CEO: "Let’s ask ourselves -- what am I doing today? How am I educating myself and my stakeholders about structural racism? How am I holding space to allow for conversations about structural racism in my company? What practices does my company have in place to support Black and People of Color team members? How am I supporting Black and People of Color business leaders that are in the B Corp community or other communities I’m a part of? How am I supporting civic engagement to hold public leaders accountable and tackle structural racism in our systems of government?"

16 | One teachers note to white colleagues: This is where you can begin: 1. Use your white privilege to let your white family and friends know how to gather information about the black experience vs images seen on tv or social media. 2. Do your own research about being anti-racist and let me know what you find out. 3. Use your white privilege (through social media or any other platform)to acknowledge and denounce the racist system this country is built on. Our students are your students and they’re hurting. For ex. Imagine being the director of a battered women’s shelter and not speaking up about the violence and trauma they endure. Silence has proven to be very deadly so far. 4. Don’t cry. Just understand where we’re coming from. Tears have done nothing to end racism. 5. Check your own privilege every day. 6. Check in all of your black and brown colleagues and friends. 7. Reach out to your fellow white educators from the past and present and tell them their silence is noticeable and it leads to the continued distrust black people have for white leaders in black and brown schools. School colonization: come in and save the poor children and then leave. Wash. Rinse. Repeat. 8. Get comfortable being uncomfortable because nothing will change if white people refuse to acknowledge their power and privilege. 9. I’m exhausted and white people need to have their own sessions about diversity because it’s a session that’s not for POC. An expert can be the moderator but POC shouldn’t participate. It’s a safety net for white people and I’m tired of it. It’s not my duty to educate any white person on race. 10. I love you with all my heart and it’s time to change. ❤️❤️
