In January, 2021, we received a report from an individual who said she had received a nomination for a recognition award with offensive answers. The nomination form gave the nominee’s name as Aunt Jemima; the email address was a curse word. The answers to the questions on the form were “syrup was it" and “bitches need syrup.” The nominator gave his/her name as Adolf Hitler.

In February, 2021, we received a report from an individual who reported his family had been harassed while using a shared lounge space at an apartment complex. A man who said he was a property owner told them, rudely, that the space was under maintenance and that they had to leave. He told them they could not read, apparently based on their accents, and called them “intruders” and “thieves." He accused them of stealing his keys until he found them. He identified himself repeatedly as “Mickey Mouse.” Later, the family saw the man in the shared lounge space with others, watching the Super Bowl. The incident happened in Monroe County; referred to MCHRC.

In April, 2021, a member of the public reported that a tree on public property had been vandalized. Someone had carved the word “nigger" and the letters “KKK” in the bark of a tree. Parks investigated and removed the carvings.

In April, 2021, the IDS reported that an Asian man had been attacked in February, 2021. He was working as an Uber driver when five people tried to get in his car. He told them that no more than four people could ride in his car and canceled the ride. The man in the front seat refused to leave and repeatedly asked him, “Do you eat bats?" The driver called 911 and told the passenger that the police were on their way. The passenger got out of the car and tried to tackle the driver; the driver avoid the blow, but fell on the concrete, scraping his hands. His glasses fell off when he fell; the passenger smashed them. Police investigated.

In February, 2020, we received a report from BPD and other sources concerning an encounter between an African American man riding a scooter and a white man driving a car. The scooter rider said a white man driving a car closely followed him while he was riding his scooter on the road. The white man was yelling at him, so he stopped riding, leaving the scooter in the road. He and the white man argued a bit. Then the driver started to drive away, but the scooter was caught under this car. He backed up, removed the scooter and tossed it in the grass. The two argued some more. As the driver drove away, the African American man said that the driver called him a “dumb nigger.” BPD investigated.

In February, 2020, we received reports of an argument on an IU bus. The driver, a white woman, repeatedly told an African American male passenger to go to the back of the bus. When he did not, she called the police. An African American female passenger tried to talk to the driver; the driver yelled at her in turn. The driver was suspended.

In February, 2020, we saw a report in the Indiana Daily Student about two African American students at the Intramural Center repeatedly being asked by staff to show their student ids. They said white students were not asked to do the same. One of the students said the staff person was very aggressive and gave contradictory reasons for the request.

In February, 2020, we received an email about hateful, anti-Chinese messages being posted on a subReddit that has been quarantined. The message claimed that many of the Chinese students at III come from the Wuhan province and that “many of them eat diseased animals like bats, monkeys and rats and that’s how scientists say the virus [coronavirus] originated.” The message urged people “to keep an eye out on Chinese who appear infected. Do not approach them do not go near them. Call the cops as soon as you see them and make sure you spread the word. The Chinese are very dirty and sick people. People watch out. God bless.”

In February, 2020, we received a report from BPD about a dispute between several men. A Black man said he had told people nearby that he was not feeling well and asked them to be quiet. One of the people nearby told the Black man to shut up and called him obscene names, including “nigger.” He tried to tackle the Black man and others piled on. Another witness said the Black man had started the incident and had been calling another Black man “nigger." When others tried to intervene, the Black man struck them. Other witnesses concurred with the witness’s account. The Black man was charged with disorderly conduct and battery.

In February, 2020, we received a report about an alleged battery. Because juveniles were involved, we will not give details, but the allegations included the use of the term “Asian bitch” and questions about whether the Asian person had COVID-19.

In May, 2020, we received a report from BPD about an incident in a park involving several juveniles. Because juveniles were involved, we will not give details. The juveniles had had conflicts in the past, and the incident reported to BPD involved some of the juveniles calling the other juveniles “African girls,” “niggers” and “bitch." The incident escalated to include shoving and slapping. BPD investigated.

In August 2020, we received a report from an individual that her Muslim neighbor’s windows had been broken. They reported the incident to the police.

In October, 2020, we received a report from the media about a person who drove by an outdoor Yom Kippur service and yelled anti-Semitic statements. The incident was reported to IUPD.

In January, 2019, we saw media accounts of verbal harassment on campus. A white man has been seen on campus yelling comments at African Americans such as “There’s a majority here. Do you understand me?” He’s also used the word “nigger.” An African American woman told the IDS that she was the only black person of about 50 people waiting for the bus when the man approached her. She said it was almost like the crowd parted the way for him to come up to talk to her. She said no one warned her or talked to him, and no one asked if she was ok after. Campus officials investigated.

In January, 2019, we saw media accounts of hateful graffiti being found on the restroom stalls at Bloomington High School North. Someone wrote on several restroom stall walls, “KKK” and “Kill all Jews.” Custodians pained over the graffiti. Police investigated. Later that same month, we saw two additional media accounts of hateful, anti-Semitic graffiti written in black pen in the men’s room at North. BHSN identified a suspect.

In January, 2019, we received a report online about a property manager calling tenants “Mexican trash."

In March, 2019, we received a report about an assault that happened in late February. An African American man reported he had been subjected to racial slurs and when he responded verbally, he was physically attacked. His attacker was arrested and charges are pending.

In May, 2019, we received a report that two parking meters were vandalized with swastikas and the words “white power.” The City removed the graffiti.

In August, 2019, we received reports of numerous KKK flyers being distributed around town. BPD investigated.

In August, 2019, we received a report from a woman who saw a man downtown verbally harassing passersby, yelling “Are we in Berkeley?” to two woman who were holding hands and “Asian, Asian" to an Asian man. She also reported the incident to BPD.

In August, 2019, we received a report the “KKK” had been painted on a highway overpass. BPS investigated. The graffiti was painted over.

In August, 2019, we received a report that a swastika had been painted on a sign at the entrance of a neighborhood. Police investigated.

In August, 2019, we received a report that a swastika had been painted on a public sign. The caller also reported the vandalism to BPD.

In September, 2019, we received a report that Delores Huerta and her daughter Alicia were subjected to verbal slurs that questioned their presence on campus. Delores Huerta, a noted labor leader and civil rights activist who co-founded the Farmworkers Association with Cesar Chavez, was in Bloomington to give the keynote address as part of National Hispanic Heritage Month.

In January, 2018, we received a report from an individual. He was serving tables at a restaurant. Customers, apparently from a sorority, entered the restaurant and yelled, “Whatsup my niggas” at the server and at a Middle Eastern male customer sitting nearby. A female customer objected to the comments, but did not persist in objecting after being told, “It’s America. I can say whatever I want.”

In January, 2018, we received a second-hand report from an individual. He reported that a friend of his had received the following message on the Grindr dating app: “Are ya too crossed eyed or too chink eyed to see the words? You’re hated here man. We hope you see the way out.”

In March, 2018, we received a report from BPD. A man reported that another man had harassed him, called him racial slurs and punched him and another man. Police investigated.

In April, 2018, we received a report from an individual that a friend of his was pumping gas and speaking a language other than English. A man approached him and said, “Shut up and speak English.”

In May, 2018, we received a report from BPD about an assault and racial slurs. A man reported that another man came up to him when he was in line at a food truck, punched him in the chest, called him a racial slur and told him to go back to where he came from. Police found the alleged assailant, who claimed to be a member of the Aryan Nation. He yelled racial insults at the officers as well. He was charged with battery and disorderly conduct.

In June, 2018, we received a report of an assault from BPD. A dispute about how a pet was being held led to one person saying, “I’ll kill you, nigger” and threatening to come back with a knife. Police investigated.

In June, 2018, we received a report from BPD about a dispute. When security at a residence would not allow a visitor in after hours, the visitor allegedly said, “Fuck you nigger, I’ll fucking kill you.” He was charged with intimidation and drug possession.

In July, 2018, we received a report from BPD about an incident at a fast food restaurant. An intoxicated man was walking through the drive through, harassing customers and pushing over signs. Officers told him to leave; as he walked away, he said he would “kill all those niggers.” An officer told him to not make those comments and to walk away. The man continued to make racial slurs to passersby and to the officers. He was arrested and charged with public intoxication.

In September, 2018, we received a report from an individual that several students, including one Chinese student and one Korean student, were subjected to verbal harassment from people in a passing car. A young white man in the car yelled, “Go back to China, bitch.”

In October, 2018, we received a report from BPD about a dispute. A woman allegedly shoved another woman’s child out of her way with a backpack. The child’s mother told the first woman not to touch her child. The woman called the mother a “nigger” and hit her in the face several times. The mother said she had “blacked out” because of the injuries; the responding officer saw no physical injuries. The mother hit the woman in return. The woman said she had accidentally bumped the child, then the mother became very angry when she did so; that the mother hit her first and that she pushed the mother back in self-defense. Police investigated.

In February, 2017, the BHRC received a report that numerous flyers and posters from a white nationalist group had been posted on the IU campus. Recipients reported the posters to IUPD and to the FBI.

In March, 2017, we received a report from BPD about an attack in the restroom of a bar. A man reported that he had gone to the restroom alone when a white male punched him on the side of his face. He slipped and fell, hitting his face on the stall door. Someone called him a “sand nigger.” BPD investigated.

In March, 2017, we observed graffiti on the wall of a social service agency claiming that the agency hates gays.

In April, 2017, we received a report from BPD about harassment. A white tenant called his African American tenant a “nigger” and said that she and her family were all “worthless low lives.” The white man admitted to BPD that he had made the comments, but said his black friend did not object to such comments. BPD asked him to be amicable with his neighbors and to not use racial slurs toward people who might be offended.

In May, 2017, we received a report from BPD about vandalism. A homeowner reported that someone had spray-painted swastikas and a phallic symbol on the back of his house.

In June, 2017, BPD reported a battery. An African American man said that a white man yelled at him, called him “nigger” and spat in his face. He responded by striking the white man. BPD investigated.

In June, 2017, BPD reported vandalism. Two men in car said a man in a passing car said “There’s two homos in a BMV, what are you, a pair of faggots?” The driver threw a glass bottle at the car, damaging the hood, and then a plastic water bottle at the car. The driver who threw the bottles was charged with criminal mischief.

In October, 2017, the City received reports of several incidents of racially offensive vandalism, including the letters "KICK” and images of swastikas. The graffiti was found at the East Tenth Street undeipass, the Unitarian Universalist church, the intersection of College Mall Road and Sare Road and the railway underpass at College and 14l" Street. Public Works staff painted over the graffiti.

In August, 2016, we received a report from BPD about intimidation and threats. An employee, an African American woman, tried to stop an altercation between two men. One of the men, a white man, came at the African American woman as if he were going to fight her. He said he was going to “fucking skin you and your nigger kid.” Other people reported similar comments. One reported that the man had called him names and grabbed him by the shirt, but he didn't want to press charges. BPD arrested the white man for threats and intimidation.

In October, 2016, BPD reported an act of vandalism. A woman reported that someone had keyed her son’s car, writing the word “fag” on it and leaving mustard and bologna all over the car. BPD investigated.

In November, 2016, someone spray painted swastikas and the letters “KKK” on the B-line trail and on light poles. BPD investigated.

In November, 2016, a white woman reported that she had been on the sidewalk with a white man when two bicyclists, one African American and, one possibly Latino, passed by. One of them yelled, “Go back to England, you racists.”

In November, 2016, vandalism was found at the Monroe County Democratic Headquarters. Someone painted “MAGA” (make American great again) on a window. They wrote on a door, “#YHUGE,” “Safe Spaces Aren’t Real” and “Hillary 4 Prison.” And they wrote the letter “K” over the “H” on a sign for Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

In December, 2016, the BI-IRC received a report that a swastika with a slash through it had been painted on a building near downtown.

In February, 2016, we received a report from BPD about an assault. A woman said she had been at a bar with four friends and one of them went missing. Bar management said the missing man had been told to leave the bar because he had been drinking. The missing man then called BPD to report he had been assaulted at the bar. He said he had gone to the women’s restroom to check on his best friend, who was upset. He said management threw out him, calling him a “fag” as they did, and taking his phone. He said they tore his shirt and one of them put his hands around his neck. Management said the man had followed a woman into the restroom despite her telling him several times to go away. They said his shirt might have gotten torn as he resisted being told to leave, but they denied having touched his neck or taken his phone. The woman who had been in the restroom said she barely knew the man, even though he kept saying they were best friends. BPD investigated.

In February, 2016, we received a report from BPD about an assault. An African American man reported that he had been walking in the downtown area when a car with three white males passed him. Their brakes screeched. A person in the car yelled a racial slur at him, and someone threw a liquid at his back. Police investigated, including watching surveillance tapes from several businesses, but could not locate the suspects.

In March, 2016, we received a report from BPD about an assault. A man reported that he had been walking in the downtown area when several people said racial slurs and one of them threw a bottle at him, hitting him in the back of his head. He said the one who threw the bottle told him to “go back to his country” and that he “talked funny.” BPD talked to the person who threw the bottle; he said he didn’t throw it at anyone, but just threw it. He was intoxicated. He was aggressive towards the police for taking the word of a foreigner over his. He said he was military and so the officers should believe him. BPD investigated.

In April, 2016, we received a report from an individual that she had been walking with her daughter when a passenger in a passing car said, “almost as an aside, ‘Nigger.’”

in April, 2016, we received a report from BPD about an assault. An African American man said he had been waiting with a white friend outside of a grocery store when he noticed a person acting in an erratic behavior, yelling and screaming as he walked through the parking lot. He asked the man if he was okay. The man then punched him in the nose and went into the grocery store. Officers found him in the restroom. He appeared to be intoxicated. He did not answer questions about the assault. Once arrested, he started yelling “white power” and claimed the altercation had involved three or maybe four African American men. He verbally attacked the officer for arresting him for attacking a black man.

In May, 2016, we received a report from a transgender individual that she was harassed at a bar for using the women’s restroom.

In July, 2015, we received a report from BPD about threatening and intimidating behavior. An African American man said a white man at a gas station called him “nigger” and threatened to blow him and his car up if he saw him again. The victim said he had investigated the white man’s girlfriend as part of his job. BPD investigated.

In July, 2015, we recieved a report from an individual who said she had beenwalking in front of several African Americans when five white passersby laughed and said, “Look at the niggers.”

In July, 2015, we received a report from BPD about, vandalism. A business person reported that someone shot the front of his house with a paint ball gun. On a nearby bridge, someone has spray painted “Fuck Jews.” BPD investigated.

In August, 2015, we received a report from BPD about an assault. A gay man went to a party wearing compression shorts, no shirt and an emblem painted on his chest. One of the hosts of the party, a straight man, said “What the fuck is this? Get this faggot out of my house.” After more conversation, the straight man shoved the gay man, and as the gay man left the party he was hit several times, but he was not sure by whom. He did not want to press charges.

In August, 2015, we received a report from BPD about vandalism. A man reported that someone had scratched his car, including scratching the word “fag” into the paint. He found out later that he was apparently not parking in his assigned lot in his parking garage.

in September, 2015, we received a report from an individual that she had been the victim of street harassment because she was wearing an Islamic headscarf.

In September, 2015, we received a report of an assault. A Latino couple said they had been outside their hotel room, smoking and drinking, when they got into a verbal argument with two African American men who were drinking outside their nearby hotel room. Both couples went inside but then ended up outside again later. One of the black men said “insecure Mexicans,” which made the Latino male angry. He called them “niggers” and “Negros.” One of the black men then punched him in the mouth. BPD investigated; the hotel said the room supposedly rented by two black men was rented by an older white man.

In October, 2015, we received a report from BPD about an assault. A white man assaulted a Muslim woman by grabbing her by the neck, pushing her down and pulling on her scarf. He yelled “white power,” “kill the police" and “fuck the niggers” before he approached the woman at her place of business. The attack occurred in front of the woman's young daughter. The woman's husband and a passerby pulled the man off of her. The white man threatened to kill the husband, passerby and police, and spat on them. The white man was intoxicated. He was arrested and charged. He called the officers “niggers” and “pussies” as he was being transported to jail.

In February, 2015, we received a report from BPD about an assault. A white man reported that his nose had been broken during a fight in a bar. The person who broke his nose is an African American man, who said that the victim had been calling him "nigger" all night long. The victim threatened the African American’s life. In the parking lot, the victim confronted the African American man, still calling him "nigger" and threatening his life. The African American man hit him one time and left. The white man denied making any of these comments to the African American man. BPD investigated.

In April, 2015, we received a report from BPD about harassment. An African American man said he has a female roommate who has a boyfriend. He said that he had come home to find ail of his personal items removed from the apartment. His roommate and her boyfriend denied any knowledge of what had happened to his belongings, so he called the police. They then tried to say they had been joking and they returned all of his things. The next day, they drove past him and yelled "nigger” at him and threatened him for having called the police. BPD was unable to find any earlier report that he had made about his missing belongings. BPD investigated.

In June, 2015, we received a report from BPD about a weapons offense. A woman reported that a neighbor had called her "nigger" and had pointed a shot gun at her. The neighbor said she had confronted him about his music in a very aggressive manner. He said he had called her a “nigger,” but only after she called him “white trash.” He said he had picked up his gun by the door and carried it away, but did not point it at the woman. BPD told both of them to call BPD if they have issues with each other.

In July, 2014, we received a report from BPD about criminal mischief and vandalism. A woman reported that she had been parked with her fiancee as they prepared to get married. A man in an adjacent car made comments about two women marrying and about their sexuality. When the two women returned to their car, they found a scratch along the whole side of the vehicle on the passenger side. The scratch had not been there before. She did not know if the man who made the comments had also scratched her vehicle. BPD investigated.

In July, 2014, we received a report from BPD about a battery/assault. A man reported that he had been walking on a trail by himself, skipping and singing. Two men walked up behind him and kicked him in the legs. When he tried to get up, one of the men knocked him down again. One of the men spat in his face. The men left. One of them said to him as they were leaving, "Go get fucked by a horse you disgusting piece of shit faggot.” BPD noted that the incident occurred outside of the City limits and referred the matter to the sheriff’s department.

In September, 2014, we received a report from BPD about a battery/assault. A white man reported that he had been attacked by an African American man in a restaurant parking lot. The investigation revealed that the white man had been drinking. Inside the restaurant, he had gone up uninvited to two African American men, put his arms around them, and said, "When did it get so dark in here?” He also made other racial and derogatory comments. One of the African American men told him to leave, but he stayed at the table and continued to make comments. Restaurant management told him to leave. He went to the parking lot, where one of African American men hit him several times. Other patrons tried to stop the fight, but another African American kicked him while he was down. The white man said he did not want to press charges because he had made inappropriate comments and "deserves what 1 got."

In October, 2014, we received a report from BPD about an assault. A white man reported that he had confronted a white man he knew who had called him a "nigger lover" because he was seeing an African American woman. A fight followed, and he was hit in the head. He had multiple broken bones around his eye socket and jaw, and he had to have reconstructive facial surgery. BPD talked to the attacker, who said the victim had been confrontational and head- butted him and threatened to kill him before he (the attacker) hit him (the victim) in the face. The attacker’s version said nothing about using the term "nigger-lover" but said the fight was over a woman they had in common, and that the victim brought this up every time he got drunk. The attacker was arrested and charged,

In December, 2014, we received a report from BPD about vandalism. A woman reported that she had argued with a relative about her African American boyfriend, and she later saw that someone had keyed the word "nigga" on the passenger side of her car. BPD talked to the relative, who denied having caused the damage; a witness supported his statement.

In January, 2014, we received a report from BPD about battery at a school. A fight between students was apparently motivated by one student repeatedly calling another student "nigger" on Facebook. BPD investigated.

In April, 2014, we received a report from BPD about intimidation. A white woman said that as she was checking out at a grocery store, an African American man had made rude comments to her and reached across the counter in a rude fashion. She said words were exchanged between him and her outside. She said that the man drove recklessly close to her daughter and tried to swing at her through the car window. Other witnesses said the woman and her daughter called the African American man "nigger" while they were in the store. When the woman heard what witnesses had said, she said she didn't want to pursue a complaint and told her daughter not to sign a statement. The African American man said the woman and her daughter made snide comments to him and ordered him to move while they were in the store. He said the woman's husband called him "nigger" and told him, "Go back to your car, nigger." He said he was upset but didn’t say anything. As he left, the daughter said, "Go ahead, try to hit me." Neither party wanted to press charges.

In May, 2014, we received a report from BPD about a battery. Two men engaged in a fight outside of a bar. One man said the other man called him a "kike" and instigated the fight. One of the men was charged with disorderly conduct and illegal consumption of alcohol by a minor. The other man was charged with disorderly conduct.

In August, 2013, we received a report from BPD about harassment. An African American man said he was standing in an alley when a white man in a pick-up began backing up toward him. Friends of the African American man yelled at the driver because they did not think the driver saw the African American man. The driver said, "You niggers need to watch out when I'm trying to back out." The African American man and his friends, also African American, yelled at the driver until they were asked to leave by a staff person nearby. BPD told the African American /n£ a that no crime had been committed. Nevertheless, they tried to investigate, without success.

In August, 2013, we received a report from BPD about a battery. An Asian man said he had been to parties in his apartment complex with some of his friends. He saw that these friends were at a party next door, introduced himself and talked to some of the young women present. A group of males, black and white, called him "Jackie Chan" and made jokes about his national origin. He protested their comments. They became angry and threw him out of the apartment. Then they followed him to his apartment, and assaulted him. When BPD interviewed him, his left eye was red and swollen and his lip was bloody. BPD was unable to locate the alleged attackers.

In April, 2013, we received a report from BPD about harassment. A restaurant employee said that a semi-regular customer had been in the restaurant earlier and had used foul language. Previously, the customer had called an employee a “fag.” On this date, the customer was using foul language in genera! and had become upset. The employee asked the customer to leave, which led to the customer yelling, telling the employee to “go fuck” himself and threatening to “shoot the place up.” The employee said that on previous visits, the customer had made racist comments to customers and other homophobic comments to employees. By the time the police arrived, the customer had left and the police could not find him. BPD told the employee to let the police know if the customer returns, so that BPD may advise the customer about trespass and felony intimidation.

In May, 2013, we received a report from BPD about a battery. An African American woman was trying to help a white male friend who had been in a fight. She was cleaning his wounds when his girlfriend came. The girlfriend told her to stop cleaning his wounds because she wanted to walk the man home. The African American woman said she wanted to finish what she was doing. The white woman said, depending on which witness you believe, “Let's not get ghetto here,” “ghetto nigger,” “ghetto nigger bitch” or “dirty nigger.” She also, by one account, spat in the African American woman’s face. The African American woman chased the white woman out of the apartment and repeatedly hit and kicked her, in view of a police officer. The police arrested the African American woman.

In May, 2013, we received a report from BPD about a possibly pre- arranged fight between some juveniles, apparently provoked by one boy calling another a “nigger” and being called a “pussy” in return. BPD investiaated.

In May, 2013, we received a report from BPD about an incident. A man said that he met someone who gave him a ride home. They were talking outside of his home when they were approached by another man. Both the man who approached them and the visitor then hit him and stole some pills and cash from him. He reported the incident to the police. When he later followed up by sending a text message to the man who had given him a ride home, that man replied, “ IDK (1 don't know) what zip XQ means, but if you try to get at the police nigga they won’t like that. You were trying to sell me ur (your) pills U (you)stupid nigger.” The victim admitted to the police at that time that he had sold some pills to the man who gave him a ride home and that they stole back some of the cash he had received for the pills. BPD investigated.

In June, 2013, we received a report from BPD about a battery. Witnesses reported that two African American men kept hitting on some women in a bar. A male friend of the women told the African American men to leave the women alone, and one of the African American men hit the male friend, knocking out two teeth. The police arrested the African American man after a chase by vehicle and foot. The African American man initially claimed his friend had thrown the punch, but later admitted it was him. He said the male friend had called him “nigger." He said he ran from the police because he was on probation.

In July, 2012, we received a report from BPD about a battery and attempted robbery. Two men and a woman reported that they had been home watching a movie on television when two men came into the apartment and yelled, “Give me your money, faggot." The men hit one of the male residents in the head, causing him to bleed. Then the two invaders fled the apartment. The male resident told police he did not know who the two men were. He reported that three weeks earlier, he had come home to find the words “Fuck you fag" written at the top of his door. BPD investigated.

In August, 2012, we received a report from BPD about vandalism. A man reported that someone had keyed the words “1 rape kids" and “fag," as well as the letter “X",pn his car. BPD investigated.

In August, 2012, we received a report from BPD about a battery. Several juvenile females got into a fight. One girl called another girl “a bitch and a nigger." One girl had a scratch on her cheek but did not want to press charges. BPD told all of the'girls to stay away from each other.

In September, 2012, we received a report from BPD about a battery. A white woman reported that she had told a visitor at her apartment that she was engaged to a white man, who was in her apartment, and that she was also having a relationship with a black man. The white male visitor became very irate at the news. He said he was a white supremacist and said several racial slurs. He also yelled at her about being unfaithful to her fiance. She shouted in his face about his intolerance and he shoved her and spat on her. He toid her that white supremacists were coming to town and they would harm her and her African American friend. BPD sought an arrest warrant for the white male visitor and explained protection and no contact orders to the victim.

In September, 2012, we received a report from BPD about a battery involving juveniles at a school. One student called another “gay" and said he was going to beat the student up. The student who was called gay said he would not fight back. The first student hit him several times until the second student did fight back, at which point the first student slammed the second student’s head against the wall. The first student was arrested.

In September, 2012, we received a report from BPD about a battery. A child with autism called older neighborhood kids “white trash” and “black trash." One of the older kids responded by hitting the child with autism with a belt, causing a welt. He said he didn't mean to hit the younger kid. Rather, he was just swinging his belt, trying to scare him. BPD investigated.

In October, 2012, we received a report form BPD about vandalism. A woman reported that someone had keyed the word “fag” on the trunk of her car. BPD investigated.

In October, 2012, we received a report from BPD abouf a battery. A woman reported she had an argument with a white male friend after he called her boyfriend a “nigger.” When he said that, she yelled at him, and he hit her in the mouth. She tried to hit him back, but he ducked and locked himself in his bedroom. The man claimed she had hit him as well, but he did not recall on which side of his face he had been hit and had no injury. Both of the participants had been drinking. Neither wanted to press charges against the other.

In November, 2012, we received a report from BPD about vandalism. A man reported someone had painted “1 gay” on the side of his house. BPD investigated.

In November, 2012, we received a report from BPD about vandalism. Someone spray painted the words “gay” on the side of a woman's house. BPD investigated, noting the similarity between this and the previous incident.

In February, 2012, we received a report from an individual who worked at a place of public accommodations. An African American man used rude, vulgar and sexist language towards two female patrons, calling them “homeless cunt whores." A white security officer told the African American man that he had to leave the premises because of his language. The man said the officer was a “white redneck racist motherfucker" as he was escorted off the premises.

In March, 2012, we received a report from an individual who worked at a place of public accommodations. Four African American men were being loud and vulgar at this facility. When a white security officer told the men they needed to quiet down or leave, the men called him a “white fucker racist.”

In April, 2012, we received a report from the HT that someone had scrawled the word “Hitler” and a swastika on a Jewish Studies poster in Goodbody Hall. IUPD investigated.

In August, 2011, we received a report from a visitor to the office who reported that when he asked a Latina to leave the place of public accommodation 'wftefe he works, because she was yelling and causing a scene, she called him “racist."

In September, 2011, we received reports from numerous sources saying that someone wrote “criminals deport” on a picture of a Latino McDonald’s employee in a newspaper. The newspaper was at La Casa, lU’s Latino Cultural Center. Someone also used magnetic letters to spell out “You need to leave" on La Casa’s refrigerator. La Casa held a town meeting to respond to the incidents.

In September, 2011, we received a report from a Japanese individual. He said he was walking on campus when a car passed and someone in the car yelled at him, “. . . country, you fucking Japanese.” He said the voice sounded like a woman or young boy, and he could not provide identifying information about the car or license plate, other than the car was dark blue.

In October, 2011, we received a report from BPD about vandalism. Someone painted “You are gay” on the steps of a home. The residents, a man and a woman, did not have a clue as to who might have done this or why. Maintenance removed the graffiti.

In November, 2011, we received a report from BPD about a' battery, A woman said when she got off the bus, she spat her gum out.:>A man nearby whom she knew thought she had spat the gum at him. She said the man told her not to spit gum at him and told her, “Nigger, you’re nasty. I’ll have my sister kill your sister and I’ll strangle you.” She said he punched her in the arm, pushed her at a tree and walked away. The man said the woman had spat gum at her, hitting him in the head. He said he pushed her when the gum hit his head but did not strike her. He denied having made the comments. No one had any visible injuries. No charges were filed. BPD did not classify this as a bias incident, but we included it because of the biased language.

In November, 2011, we received a report from BPD about harassment. A woman said she needed to go into a grocery store very quickly, and she parked in the fire lane. She said she knew she “probably” should not have done that. When she got out of her car, an older man approached her and said he was going to call the police on her. She said he called her “black bitch” and “nigger.” She told him to go ahead and call the police and she cussed him out in turn. She said she saw the man in the store. She asked him if he had called the police and what his name was, but he didn’t answer. She got his license plate number when she left the store. BPD found the man, who said he was a retired firefighter and that he routinely calls in reports when he sees someone has violated fire lane ordinances. He called 911 about this incident. He said when he talked to the woman, she said he was picking on her because she is black. He told her that was not the case. He denied using any offensive terms and said he would not do something like that. He said she was very loud and cursing, and that she had followed him in the store, telling him, Tm still here and I’m watching you.” BPD told both people that they could have handled the situation in a “little bit better way.” No charges were filed. BPD did not classify this as a bias incident, but we included it because of the biased language.

In November, 2011, we received a report from the IDS that someone had taken two Hebrew characters off the Chabad’s House on campus. One character was found lying nearby but the other one was not. IUPD did not characterize this as a hate crime, but the director of Chabad told the IDS he felt the house was being specifically targeted, so we included it.

In November, 2011, we received a report from BPD about a battery. An African American woman said she and her boyfriend had been at a convenience store parking lot when a white man came up, called her boyfriend a “nigger” and then pushed her up against a truck in the parking lot. She said she hit him in the face to get him off of her. The man said that he had gotten into an argument with the couple. He said he tried to walk away, but then he walked back to the woman and the argument continued. He said the woman struck him in both of his eyes with her fists and hit him in the back of his head. He said he pushed her to get her away from him. One witness said she saw the woman strike the man as he was walking away; she did not see the man strike the woman but her view was partially blocked. The boyfriend said the white man threatened his girlfriend and called him “nigger.” He said he tried to defuse the situation, but the white man and his girlfriend “got into each other’s faces.” He said the white man pushed the woman and the woman in turn hit the white man. BPD arrested both the white man and the African American woman, charging them both with battery.
