11 | LANL VEHICLE ACCESS PORTALS |
12 | All vehicles entering Los Alamos National Laboratory property are required to stop at the East and West Jemez Road "Vehicle Access Portals" (VAPs) for vehicle checks. Drivers must show 1 form of picture identification from any of these (DOE badge, federal badge, valid driver's license or a valid passport) before proceeding. This security perimeter is intended to protect the Laboratory against the possibility of terrorist attacks. At these VAP’s they will check your identification and tell you that no photography is allowed. Random car inspections do happen. Firearms, alcohol, and illegal drug are not allowed on Lab property. There is an alternate route if necessary. |

14 | There are two alternate routes. One is going on West Road next to the Los Alamos Medical Center. Get on West Road and go down the hill past the ice rink. Stay on West Road and it goes up and around past the road to Pajarito Ski Hill and comes out on NM 501. NM 501 goes out to Hwy 4 where you can take a left to go to Bandelier and eventually White Rock, or take a right where it takes you to the Valles Caldera, Jemez Springs and eventually to NM 599 (left off of this road goes to Albuquerque). The other route is to go through White Rock, past Bandelier on NM 4, past the intersection of 501, and then you end up going to the Valles Caldera, Jemez Springs, and then reaching NM 599. |
