|We have adopted Français Interactif as our main textbook for the first three semesters of French instruction at NIU for several reasons. The most important of these is that the online format is more compatible with our technology-driven culture. It's more intuitive for our students since they are used to exploring websites with various clickable areas. We also find the flexibility of the chapters and the inclusion of videos, songs, culture, and Internet activities to be more supportive of our goals as language instructors compared to the traditional textbook format. They allow us to include more listening comprehension, pronunciation, and culture activities than previous texts. And it is a major benefit that our students can access the book for free! |
We try to let our instructors have as much freedom as possible to follow their own teaching style, but as a general rule we assign Tex's French Grammar exercises as homework and try to do as many of the chapter activities in class as possible, always leaving plenty of time to use the videos and interviews as listening comprehension activities. Our students love to share their opinions about the various French speakers that are featured! We also really appreciate the modular format of the website, since it allows each instructor to tailor their daily lesson plans to the goals of their individual classes for the week while maintaining an overarching curriculum that keeps all sections on the same track. We are very happy with Français Interactif, and are grateful that we can offer our students an affordable text that is also ahead of the competition when it comes to content and format.
