12 | When I teach Spanish intermediate, I assign the Open Source textbook I designed as the only required material. The textbook has been peer-reviewed and is comparable with any commercial textbook, including communicative activities working on all four skills as well as level-appropriate vocabulary and grammar points and activities. It also considers different aspects of hispanic culture. In the classroom, students complete different activities in the textbook, particularly the task-based and communicative activities, while grammar and vocabulary activities are assigned as homework and we review them in class. The textbook also includes a vocabulary section at the end of each unit where important vocabulary items studied throughout the unit are listed and students are given the opportunity to work on them by looking up their meaning and contextualizing them. This is different from commercial textbooks, but I've seen students like this opportunity to interact with new vocabulary. It also offers grammar extended explanations of the different grammar points at the end of each unit, which additional practice activities. In general, the textbook has received praise from students, instructors and reviewers and I am in the process of revising it and preparing it for its publication as an official Open Textbook. |
