The Research Group Applied Thermodynamics and Heat Transfer focuses on systems where heat transfer is the main energy transfer mode. The aim is to develop more energy efficient systems. By doing this, the research contributes to formulating technical solutions for the reduction of CO2 emissions in compliance with the Green Deal initiative of the European Union. Based on the laws of thermodynamics, models are developed for thermal systems. These models are validated and based on experiments which are conducted in the laboratory. For these experiments up to date measurement equipment is available.

The trainee will work on a small scale windtunnel set-up, which will be used to characterize the behaviour of certain crops under uniform inflow conditions. By doing this, these different crops are characterised and a drag coefficient can be deduced for each different crop. These drag coefficients can then later be used and compared in future Computiational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)-software. The crops that will be put in the windtunnel, will mainly be small leafy green vegetables, such as basil, parsley and coriander. Different air flow rates will be used to characterize the drag coefficient of the plants in function of the incoming air velocities.

The tasks to be performed by the trainee include:
- Checking if the current windtunnel set-up is in accordance with the ISO-requirements for windtunnel-tests
- Connecting the windtunnel test-section logging devices to a measuring computer
- Performing the experiments on the different leafy green vegetables, such as basil, parsley, coriander, lettuce,... under different air flow rates.

The offer refers to a position in the research team of MultiMedia Solutions division in Goodix Technology Belgium. Our team’s main focus is developing speech enhancement solutions for mobile and automotive markets but we also develop products for capturing audio on mobile phones. The intern will be integrated into a research project related to the development of new disinfection methodologies for fabrics/surfaces by an economically viable, environmentally friendly, and innovative methodology. The results obtained in this stage will help with the development of disinfection methodologies that are more aggressive toward the pathogen cells and less aggressive toward the supporting material (masks, gloves, medical instruments, etc.) aimed at re-use. They will also help with the final proposal for the work of constructing automated sterilization devices for different applications (food and drug packages, prostheses, facial masks, etc.).

The activities to be developed by the intern in this project will include:

- training for operating the disinfection system (low-pressure plasma) and of the surface characterization techniques;
- conducting 10 disinfection experiments  in commercial N95 facial respirators fabrics;
- evaluation, with the help of material science professionals, of the effect of the treatment on the fabric properties (integrity aiming re-use);
- Evaluating, with the aid of a microbiologist professional,  the process disinfection's efficiency and the cytotoxicity of the treated fabrics (aiming for re-use);

The research program of the Immune Engineering Laboratory aims at the development of novel cancer immunotherapies. Its current focus is on immune modulation and gene therapy-based approaches for pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia.
The internship is designed to expose the exchange student to basic techniques in cell & molecular biology and transgene vector development, with a hands-on approach that foresees his/her direct involvement and full immersion into the ongoing research program. The objective will be to prime the student for the molecular aspects of medicine with special emphasis on cancer immunotherapy. The working language will be English. The internship program includes: (i) critical reading and discussion of the scientific literature relevant to the ongoing research at the host laboratory; (ii) public presentation of scientific articles, with contextual data analysis; (iii) development of a basic skill set for mammalian cell culture with notions of in vitro expansion of primary cells; (iv) notions of viral vectors used for gene transfer; (v) hands-on learning of the principles of lymphocyte gene engineering.
No previous specific training is required but basic knowledge of molecular biology, virology, or immunology will be considered major assets during the selection phase. Those candidates that excel during the internship may participate thereafter of another selection process to enter the Graduate Program in Molecular and Morphofunctional Biology of the Institute of Biology at the State University of Campinas. Candidates who show interest in pursuing a Master’s degree if selected by the laboratory and later by the Graduate Program will be given priority.

Continuous efforts have been practiced on pursuing energy storage systems with high energy density, long lifespan, and low cost. Among them, Li-ion batteries have conquered the portable electronics market and are widely employed for electric transportation.
As the demand for low-budget electric vehicles with long cruising ranges is increasing, the energy density of the current state-of-the-art electrode material LiFePO4 (LFP), advantageous from an environmental and economical point of view, no longer satisfies the needs. An alternative olivine cathode material, LiMnPO4 (LMP), shares the same theoretical capacity as LFP and comes with the benefit of a higher operational voltage of 4.1 V, resulting in a 21% increase in energy density. However, due to the material’s low conductivity and structural instability, LiMnPO4 suffers from low capacity retention. The combination of LFP and LMP, a solid solution called LiMnxFe1-xPO4 (LMFP), has therefore attracted global interest in the industry and in academia.
Your project involves the assembly of cells with pre-made LMFP electrodes followed by electrochemical characterization and contributes to our effort of elucidating the electrolyte-dependent gassing behavior of LMFP cells, a critical input for durability and safety considerations.

It encodes a series of enzymes and produces compounds which are not available in human cells, that play a role in functions as important as the breaking down of complex food components, the production of neurotransmitters, the stimulation of the immune system, the assimilation of antioxidants, the generation of precursors for hormones and a healthy metabolic function. In dogs, which are one of the most important and abundant companion animals for humans, the role of the microbiome is also crucial but is rarely tested and there no available tests. This project is developed under an alliance with a food company and a biotechnology company, towards the development of an integral solution to both test and nourish the gut microbiome of dogs.

Difficulties associated with research directly addressing the biology of the female gamete, zygote and early embryo have impeded investigations into the molecular mechanisms of fertilization and embryogenesis. Therefore, such investigations have been conducted predominantly through mutant analyses using Arabidopsis models. However, for two decades, in vitro fertilization (IVF) has been utilized as a tool in angiosperm to observe and analyze fertilization and post-fertilization processes directly.
The rice IVF system was established to take advantage of the abundant resources stemming from rice research for investigations into the mechanisms of fertilization and early embryogenesis. Fusion of gametes can be performed using electrofusion (movie of gamete fusion) and the fusion product, a zygote, forms a cell wall and an additional nucleolus. The zygote divides into an asymmetric two-celled embryo and develops into an early globular embryo, as in planta. The embryo further develops into irregularly shaped cell masses and ertile plants can be regenerated from the cell masses. This rice IVF system is a powerful tool for studying the molecular mechanisms involved in the fertilization and early embryogenesis of angiosperms and for making new cultivars.

Our laboratory is focusing on the polymeric materials as biomaterials. We are preparing new stimuli-responsive polymers, biodegradable/ bioresorbable polymers to form hydrogels, particles, and organic/ inorganic composite materials for possible application in diagnosis, drug delivery and regenerative medicine to cure diseases. Focused stimuli in our laboratory will be temperature, pH, biological signals, and ligand-receptor interactions. Thus materials preparation (i.e., polymer synthesis), characterization will be performed. In some experiments, in vitro or in vivo biological tests may be performed. In addition, frequent discussion on the research works will be carried out in English (basically biweekly or daily discussions upon request). The nominee will collaborate with my graduate students in the part of above-mentioned research.
