37 | After Action Report:
38 | - Barely in formation and the Luftwaffe showed up in force. Our top cover got a few of them, but a bunch of 190s came out of the sun (Random Event 52). Most were driven off by our fire, but one bullet hit Sgt. Bayers in the chest. His flak jacket stopped the shell, but Bayers was coughing blood. I had him moved to the radio compartment and moved Goldstein into the tail. - We had a near miss by flak and heard it rain, but everything still seemed to work. Bombs were dropped on target. - Coming off the target a couple of 109s got past the top cover. One was shot down and the other scored some hits; on landing we found our back-up hydraulic pump was destroyed, but fortunately we didn't need it. - We didn't see any more e/a and landed without incident. The sawbones say Bayers has a broken rib and inflamed lung, but should be back in a month. Black Maria will be repaired overnight.
