A variety of period pieces and original compositions in 13th-15th century N. This class will discuss the styles of men’s and women’s clothing in China from the Han Dynasty (202 BC - 220 AD) to the Ming Dynasty (1368 – 1644) and in Korea the Three Kingdoms (50 BC – 668 AD) to the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1897). This will also cover the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368) when the Mongols ruled China. We will also go over construction techniques and basic patterning. |

No previous experience required, but having a bit of experience with patterning and drafting will likely make recognizing pattern shapes easier. Class material will be geared toward Intermediate to Advanced students, with a focus on historical construction details. In December 2015, Mons and Arianna visited the V&A's Clothworkers Centre in London, where we closely examined several existing garments from the 1620s-1640s. Due to the museum's strict legal releases, we are not allowed to publish or distribute our photos and videos from this adventure, but through this class, we will able to share these images, and talk about the fascinating details we discovered during our up-close-and-personal, inside-and-out analysis of some amazing historical clothing. |
