6 | Apple held an event yesterday and here's an overview of the announcements: The Apple Watch SE is now the bargain model at $249 or $299 with cellular. The Apple Watch Series 8 adds a temperature sensor and crash detection for calling emergency services, including international roaming support. The Series 8 has 18 hours of battery, or 36 in low power mode, and costs $399 to $499 with cellular. 7 | Apple also announced a new watch model: the Ultra, which has a 49millimeter titanium case and a 2000 nit display. This is a bigger face, and gets 36 hours on a charge or 60 in low power mode. The Ultra is designed for outdoor activities enthusiasts with two bands of GPS, L1 and L5 and offers WR 100 water resistance. 8 | There are now new Air Pods Pro. A new H2 chip improves active noise cancellation, Apple added swipe controls in addition to force touch on the stems, and they can be charged with your Apple Watch and MagSafe chargers. The case has a speaker and U1 chip so you can find it when lost, and it can send low battery alerts. 9 | And, finally, the new iPhone was unveiled. The standard iPhone 14 is 6.1-inches and the 14 Plus is 6.7-inches, both with the A15 bionic chip. The camera is improved with a 12 megapixel main camera. The phones feature crash detection, just like the watch. The US will only get eSIM versions of the phone, no physical SIM tray anymore. The iPhone 14 starts at $799 and the iPhone 14 Plus starts at $899. 11 | As part of the CHIPS and Science act passed into US law in early August, the Biden administration now released more strategy details. 12 | Uber appealed to Kenya's court system to annul the new digital taxi-hailing regulations coming into effect in a few weeks. Uber claims some of the regulations are discouraging to investments, unconstitutional, and infringing on the rights of the company and customers. Kenya's rules will cap commission charges per ride at 18% compared to the current 35% commission on earnings per trip. 13 | In contrast to Twitter, Google, and Apple, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy told the Code 2022 conference in LA yesterday there's no plan to push workers back into the office. 14 | Samsung announced a new One UI and Watch 4.5 updates for older devices. Software updates will start with the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 starting September 5th, rolling out gradually worldwide. Later the One UI 4.1.1 update will roll out to much older foldables, including the original Z Flip and Fold devices. 15 | KPMG said approximately 78% of US adults see value in the metaverse, with 76% supporting on-the-job training in the metaverse, 59% expect the metaverse to have a 'significant impact' on their lives in the next twelve months, and 48% seeing significant impacts in the next five years. US leader of enterprise innovation at KPMG Cliff Justice said "With each interaction, people are becoming more accustomed to engaging in everyday activities in the metaverse." KPMG surveyed 1,000 American adults between the ages of 18 and 65. | |||||
16 | Verizon announced a unified subscription plan aimed at iPhone users. The One Unlimited for iPhone includes subscriptions to Apple Music, Apple TV+, Apple Arcade, iCloud+, and Verizon's unlimited calling plan. One Unlimited for iPhone costs $90 for one line and between $75 and $45 per line for multiple lines, and will include unlimited 5G Ultra Wideband, 5G Nationwide, and 4G LTE data. The One Unlimited for iPhone plan is available now to all new and existing Verizon Wireless subscribers. 17 | Jeep announced it will start selling two fully electric SUVs in North America, as well as one in Europe, over the next two years. Jeep's first electric SUVs, promising capable off-road travel, are part of the Stellantis brand's plans to convert half US sales and all European sales to electric by 2030. The Jeep Recon is a four-wheel-drive midsize SUV, approximately the size of the Jeep Wrangler, starting production in North American in 2024, though no range or performance info is available yet. The Wagoneer S midsize luxury SUV, also expected in 2024, is expected to hit 400 miles (650 kilometers) on a single charge, with 600 horsepower, and hit zero to sixty miles per hour (100 kilometers per hour) in 3.5 seconds. No price was announced. 18 | The Financial Times reports PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan says the Microsoft offer to keep the Call of Duty franchise on PlayStation for three years after the current agreement was "inadequate on many levels, and failed to take account of the impact on our gamers." Sony has concerns about the impact if the proposed $68.7 billion dollar acquisition of Activision Blizzard by Microsoft is approved, as the proposed three-year extension of the existing agreement could only continue Call of Duty's annual PlayStation releases through to 2027. | |||||
