17 | No. 8 Father McGivney | 3 | No. 17 O'Fallon | 2 | Final |
18 | By: Diego Solares Area Scout, Illinois & Missouri In a game that came down to the wire between these two ranked opponents, it was Father McGivney that came out on top, surviving a late rally effort from the Panthers. Father McGivney scored first when Nathan Terharr (2024) singled up the middle to plate the game's first run. The Panthers responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the fourth on a two-out opposite field double from senior Xavier Deatherage (2023). The Griffins scored in each of the next two innings. Their run in the fifth came on a bases-loaded walk, and Jackson Rodgers (2023) tripled deep down the right field line in the sixth, scoring Isaac Wendler (2026) from third. Trailing by two and three outs away from defeat, O'Fallon did what they always do and rallied back. The first two runners of the inning reached via walk, bringing Camden Cox (2025) to the plate with a runner in scoring position and nobody out. Cox battled, fouling a few pitches off before peppering a hanging breaking ball to left field for an RBI single. Dane Hrasky (2025) followed that up with a bunt single to third and, suddenly, O'Fallon had the bases loaded with nobody out. Ryker Keller (2024) entered the jam for Father McGivney with a seemingly unreachable task of keeping the lead. His first pitch was a groundball to third, where senior Jacob McKee (2023) made a diving snag and fired a strike to home, preventing a run from scoring while getting the inning's first out. He induced another groundout moments later, this time a slick play at first by the aforementioned Wendler, who too threw to home to nab the would-be tying run. Keller's first pitch to his third batter faced was a popup in foul territory caught by Wendler to end the game and secure the Griffins' win. Gabe Smith (2023) was masterful for a large chunk of this outing for Father McGivney. The Griffins' ace hurled six innings of two-run ball, limiting O'Fallon to two hits and he struck out six. Smith cruised with his fastball at 88-91, touching 92 mph in the first, and grabbed plenty of ground balls with it, while overpowering hitters down in the zone at times. On occasion, Smith spun a short wrinkle breaking ball at 73-76 mph for strikes when needed, using it more as a change of pace pitch. Despite the loss, Alex Tame (2024) and Jack Velino (2024) each threw well for O'Fallon. Tame drew the start, tossing four strong innings of one-run ball on three hits, and Velino was key once again for O'Fallon in relief, limiting the Griffins to one run on one hit over three frames.
