13 | By: Gavin Smith Area Scout Sycamore and Rock Island squared off in Geneseo for a 3A Super-Sectional game with the winner advancing to the state semifinals in Joliet this weekend. The Spartans of Sycamore came out on top in an 8-0 contest. Owen Piazza (2023; Aurora) started on the mound for the Spartans and was dominant all game. He allowed three hits in six innings of work, striking out seven in the process. Rock Island threatened in the fourth inning when a baserunner reached third with one out, but Piazza was able to strike out the next two batters, stopping the Rocks from scoring. Sycamore got things rolling in the second inning when Matthew Rosado (2024) delivered a single, followed by a walk from Jimmy Amptmann (2023; Heartland). Conner Williar (2023; Rock Valley) reached on a single, loading the bases for the Spartans. Collin Severson (2024) reached on a hit-by-pitch which scored Rosado, and Joey Puelo (2023) drove in a run on a sacrifice fly to center field, giving Sycamore the 2-0 lead. They broke the game open in the sixth inning where they tacked on six unanswered runs. Rosado started the inning off with a single again, and Williar reached on a fielder's choice, which scored Rosado. Severson delivered a single in the inning and Puleo reached on an error. Kiefer Tarnoki (2023; Lake Land) delivered an RBI single, and Tommy Townsend (2023; Butler) followed up with an RBI single, with another run scoring on an error from the right-fielder on the play. Kyle Hartmann (2024) drove in a run the next at-bat, giving the Spartans the 8-0 lead. Sycamore will play Nazareth Academy in the IHSA State Semi-Final on Friday at 12:00 pm in Joliet.
