45 | No. 9 Downers Grove North | 5 | Hinsdale Central | 4 | Final |
46 | By: Peter Hamot Area Scout, Staff Writer In a West Suburban-Silver Regional Final battle, it was Downers Grove North that came out on top thanks to some late inning heroics, knocking off Hinsdale Central 5-4. Down to their final two outs and chasing one run, Jimmy Janicki (2024; Troy) stepped in and lifted the first pitch he saw over the left-field wall for a two-run home run, sending the Trojans to Sectionals in dream-like fashion. George Wolkow (2023; South Carolina) helped set up the victory in the final inning with a gritty at-bat, taking a two-strike offering up the middle for a single and becoming the tying run. Down 4-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning, Jude Warwick (2024; Michigan State) and Wolkow delivered back-to-back doubles, followed by an RBI single from Janicki, bringing the Trojans within one at the time. Hinsdale Central got out to an early 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Ben Oosterbaan (2023; Michigan) drove in the first run of the game with an RBI double, plating Grant Davis (2023) who led the game off with a single. Max Merlo (2023), Luke Jurack (2024) and Gavin Vande Lune (2023) proceeded to knock out consecutive RBI singles, making it 4-0 at the time. The Trojans got on the board in the bottom of the first inning thanks to an RBI double from Janicki, plating Warwick who walked to start off the inning and making it 4-1 at the time. 47 | No. 15 Columbia | 6 | No. 2 Father McGivney | 3 | Final |
48 | By: Diego Solares Area Scout, Illinois & Missouri In a matchup between two of the state’s best 2A squads, it was the Columbia Eagles who came out on top, handing Father McGivney only their second loss of the season to capture the Breese Central Sectional championship. The Eagles drew first blood, scoring in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI single to center field from Tyler Rosecrans (2023). They’d chip in two more in the third on a throwing error, followed by senior Aidan Gaither’s (2023) flare single to right field. Father McGivney threatened both in the first and fourth innings, but Eagles’ star Dominic Voegele (2023) escaped both jams unscathed. The Griffins finally got to Voegele in the fifth after Gabe Smith (2023) turned on an outer-half breaking ball to barrel a single to right field. Columbia, however, responded immediately in their half of the frame after Alex Schreckenberg’s (2023) single to right field brought home a run. Things got interesting in the sixth for Father McGivney. With a runner on first, freshman Isaac Wendler (2026) worked a deep count and punished a hanging breaking ball from Voegele for a two-run blast over the left field fence, bringing the Griffins within one, now at 4-3. As they did earlier, however, the Eagles responded quickly with two runs of their own when Jack Steckler (2023) peppered a loud double to the left-center wall. Voegele recorded two quick outs in the seventh before reaching the IHSA pitch restriction, forcing him to exit the game. The future Kansas Jayhawk punched out 12 batters over 6 ⅔ innings, walking only two, and allowing three runs total. He didn’t throw a fastball under 92 mph until the sixth inning, and he reached back for his firmest bullet then too, touching 95 mph on the last pitch of the frame. Voegele comfortably threw both of his breaking balls for strikes, including gathering plenty of whiffs on a low-80s sweeping slider, and he turned to a firm changeup to left-handed hitters as well. Junior Brady Matthews (2024) entered the game in relief of Voegele and induced a quick 6-3 putout to close things out. The win put the Eagles in the 2A Super Sectional for the second year in a row, where they’ll match up against Nashville, who took down Zeigler-Royalton 1-0 on Saturday. Despite the loss, the Griffins’ historic season certainly deserves some recognition. They finished 32-4 on the year and climbed as high as No. 2 on the Illinois’ Power 25, which is the highest such achievement by a 2A school in recent memory.
