11 | Eureka | 3 | Pontiac | 1 | Final |
12 | By: Gavin Smith Area Scout In a 2A Regional Championship matchup between Eureka and Pontiac, we saw the Hornets come out winners in a 3-1 contest. A pitching duel throughout, it was Austin Wiegand (Eureka, 2023; Carl Sandburg) who shined. Wiegand allowed one run in the second inning after giving up a leadoff single to Henry Brummel (2024; Indiana), who eventually scored on an RBI from Zayn Eilts (2023). From the third inning on, Wiegand was dominant, shutting down Pontiac’s offense the rest of the game, allowing no hits or runs. Wiegand threw a complete game with 10 strikeouts, one walk, one earned run and one hit allowed. The Hornets scored all three of their runs in the bottom of the second inning, with Slater Wilcox (2023; Eastern IL) leading off the inning with a walk, eventually reaching second on a passed ball. Carson Gates (2023) came to the plate and delivered an RBI single, scoring Wilcox. Zech Lapp (2023) followed up by reaching on an error, and eventually reaching second on a wild pitch. Both Lapp and Gates eventually scored on errors, giving the Hornets the 3-1 lead. In the fifth inning, Pontiac brought Brummel into the game on the mound, and he was able to prevent the Hornets offense from doing any damage, striking out four and walking just one. Pontiac was not able to get their offense going, ultimately falling in the regional finals.
