| Minooka | 1 | Bradley-Bourbonnais | 0 | Final |
| By: Peter Hamot Area Scout, Staff Writer Minooka and Bradley-Bourbonnais faced off in the opening round of the Minooka Regional and saw the host Indians win by the narrow margin of 1-0. The lone run of the game came when Nate George (2024; Eastern Illinois) scored on a passed ball in the bottom of the third inning, reaching base via a single earlier in the frame, proceeding to steal second and third to set up the eventual run. It was a pitcher’s duel to say the least, and Ryan Anderson (2024; Arizona) was the star of the show. The tall right-hander was in control throughout the entirety of his outing, firing a complete-game shutout while only allowing two hits, one walk and striking out 11. He worked his fastball up to 87 mph and was able to move it around the zone, primarily to his glove-side, but the separator was his slider. He showed premier confidence in the pitch, landing it for strikes and to put hitters away, missing bats constantly with late and sharp bite. Facing off against Anderson was sophomore right-hander Cody Freitas (Illinois State). The fire-baller was impressive throughout his six innings of work, allowing just three hits, one earned run, four walks and striking out five. Freitas worked his fastball up to 91 mph, sitting mostly in the 89-90 mph range and holding velocity well, reaching back for 90 mph in the fifth inning. It was a heavy dose of fastballs for the most part, but he did flash a breaking ball at 74-76 mph with sharp 11/5 action. NOTABLE PERFORMANCES: Ryan Anderson (Minooka): 7 IP, 2 H, 0 R, BB, 11 K Cody Freitas (Bradley-Bourbonnais): 6 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 4 BB, 5 K Nate George (Minooka): 1-for-3, R, 2 SB | ||||
| Bloomington | 1 | Normal University | 13 | Final |
| By: Gavin Smith Area Scout In a 3A Regional Semifinal matchup between Bloomington and Normal U-High, it was the Pioneers who came out the victors 13-1. With the win, Normal U-High advanced to the Regional Championship game against Champaign Central which will be played on Saturday (5/27). U-High had three pitchers throw in the contest, and they were dominant, not allowing the Purple Raiders to produce anything offensively. Matt Sauser (2023; Florida State) threw 5 ⅓ innings, struck out 11, walked two, allowed no earned runs and three hits. He gave up one unearned run in the first inning when Trey Thompson (2024) reached on a single and eventually scored on an error. Gavin Swartz (2026; Indiana) came into the game in relief and struck out two, and Grant Marshall (2023; Rock Valley JC) closed the door, allowing one hit. The Pioneers got things going early with Sauser leading off the game with a single and eventually scoring on an error. Marshall walked a few batters later and scored on an RBI triple to right field from Braden Deverman (2025). They added two more runs in the third with Sauser reaching base on a dropped-third strike, and Connor MacMillan (2025) reaching on a bunt single. Marshall hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Sauser in the inning, and MacMillan scored on a passed ball, giving the Pioneers the 4-1 lead. U-High took advantage of some costly mistakes throughout the rest of the game, taking advantage of walks and errors to put themselves in position to score. They scored two more runs in the fourth inning and four runs in the fifth inning. They scored three runs in the seventh inning on RBI singles from Charlie Vercruysse (2024; Notre Dame), Marshall and Deverman, putting the Pioneers up 13-1 heading into the bottom half of the frame, ultimately sealing the win. 13 | Harrisburg | 0 | Zeigler-Royalton | 1 | Final |
| By: Diego Solares Area Scout, Illinois & Missouri This game came down to the wire, as the Bulldogs and Tornados dueled it out in the Du Quoin 2A Sectional semi-final game, with the latter team coming out on top in the end. It was a pitcher’s duel through and through, as Zeigler-Royalton’s Trey Cole (2023) and Harrisburg’s Noah Arnold (2024) threw up zeros for six consecutive innings. Cole, the eventual winning pitcher, hurled a complete game shutout, fanning five while scattering five hits, and walking just two. He pumped his fastball at 85-88, touching 89 mph early, and he effectively spun a tight, short wrinkle breaking ball around the zone, while flashing feel for a changeup down in the zone. Arnold went 6 ⅔ for Harrisburg, allowing a run on six hits, striking out seven. His fastball played in the low-80s and he confidently spun a 65-68 mph breaking ball with depth for strikes consistently. The game’s only run came in the top of the seventh when the aforementioned Cole drew a bases-loaded walk. Briar Rowland (2024) and Carson Hobbs (2025) each had two hits for the Tornados. Ethan Golish (2024) led Harrisburg with two hits. With the win, Zeigler-Royalton improved to 28-8 on the season and will face Nashville in Saturday’s 2A sectional championship.
