22 | By: Kevin Cronin
Tech Analysis, Area Scout Lockport completed the comeback win in 10 innings to defeat No. 1 Providence Catholic and advance to the Sectional Finals on Saturday. With two outs in the 10th, Anthony Francone (2023, St. Xavier) kept the inning alive with an infield single and Anthony Martinez (2023, South Suburban JC) followed with a hit by pitch. Batting in the cleanup spot, senior Jake Moerman delivered the go ahead hit on a two-out, 3-2 count to give Lockport the 7-6 lead heading to the bottom of the 10th inning. Lockport was down to their last out in the seventh inning before scoring two runs and sending the game into extra innings. With one out and two strikes Moerman singled to right field, followed by a walk from pinch hitter Ryan Groberski (2024). Two batters later and with two outs, Jake Schindler (2023, McHenry JC) brought home Moerman on a high chopper to third, Groberski would come around to score after the ball got away from the first baseman. After giving up three runs early in the first, Lockport tied the game up 3-3 in the fourth inning. Uncommitted junior Dylan Nagle brought the Porters to within one run with a one-out bases loaded single to plate two runs. The team’s third run to tie the game scored on a bases loaded hit by pitch. No. 1 Providence Catholic jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning. Uncommitted junior Jackson Smith launched a two-run home run two batters into the game. The third run came in off the bat of starting pitcher Nate O’Donnell. And in the bottom of the fourth after giving up three to tie the game No. 1 Providence Catholic answered with two to regain the lead. 23 | No. 4 St. Charles East | 0 | York | 2 | Final |
24 | By: Peter Hamot Area Scout, Staff Writer In a Sectional Semi-final matchup, it was the York Dukes that emerged victorious, taking down No. 4 St. Charles East by the score of 2-0. Eli Maurer (York, 2023) started the scoring in the top of the second inning with an RBI single, scoring Ryan Turner (2023) who singled earlier in the frame and making it 1-0 in favor of the Dukes at the time. The Dukes added on another run in the top of the fifth, as Josh Fleming scored from third on a throwing error to first base, bringing the score to 2-0. Ryan Sloan (2024; Wake Forest) was nothing less than dominant, picking up the win as he twirled six shutout innings with three hits, two walks and 10 strikeouts. The right-hander worked his fastball up to 95 mph early, sitting mostly in the 91-93 mph range and eventually settling in around 90 mph. He went to a sweeping slider often and in any count, sitting around 78-80 mph with feel for the zone and to put hitters away. Facing off against Sloan was sophomore southpaw Joe Arend, who was highly impressive despite receiving the loss. The young arm fired five innings while scattering six hits, one earned run, three walks and seven strikeouts. He cruised with a heavy running fastball at 83-84 mph early on, pairing it with a sharp 1/7 breaking ball at 73-74 mph and fading changeup at 79 mph. Southpaw Noah Hughes (2024) closed out the game for the Dukes with one inning of work, allowing just one hit, no runs and striking out one. The uncommitted junior sat right at 83 mph with his fastball from an over-the-top slot, appearing to be a tough look for opposing hitters. 25 | No. 14 Edwardsville | 9 | O'Fallon | 5 | Final |
26 | By: Diego Solares Area Scout, Illinois & Missouri In a battle between two Southwestern Conference rivals, Edwardsville came out on top to find themselves playing in a sectional championship game for consecutive seasons. It was O’Fallon, however, that jumped out to an early lead in this contest. The Panthers pushed a run across quickly on a double from senior Will Millard (2023), and they quickly loaded the bases with nobody out, too. O’Fallon failed to capitalize, however, as Edwardsville’s Logan Geggus (2023) punched out a pair and induced an inning-ending flyout to center field. The Panthers would score three more runs over the next two innings. Millard delivered again in the second, ripping a single to the opposite field, and Camden Cox (2025) tripled a run home in the third, coming around to score on a sacrifice fly from Dane Hrasky (2025). Heading to the bottom of the third, O’Fallon led 4-0. Edwardsville put themselves on the board with an out in the third when Riley Iffrig (2023) turned around and hammered a loud home run over the right field fence. O’Fallon didn’t score in the top of the fourth and that’s when the Tigers’ offense came to life. Lucas Huebner (2024) started the inning off with a single, coming around to score on a few pitches later thanks to a triple from Kayden Jennings (2023). Lucas Krebs (2025) drew a walk, and Greyson Rathgeb (2025) plated Jennings on a sacrifice fly to right field, making it 4-3. With two outs, Joe Chiarodo (2025) extended the inning with a single to the opposite field. That brought up the aforementioned Iffrig, who flipped the first pitch he saw to left field for an RBI single, tying the game at 4-4. Caeleb Copeland (2023) strolled to the plate and hammered a deep double to the pull-side afterwards, giving the Tigers a 6-4 lead through four. Edwardsville scored two more runs in the bottom of the fifth on a sacrifice fly from Cole Funkhouser (2023) and another RBI single from Iffrig. O’Fallon would score a run in the sixth via a Haidyn McGill (2023) sacrifice fly, but the Tigers responded with a run of their own immediately when Andrew Hendrickson (2023) homered in their half. Hendrickson also hurled four quality innings in relief, including the seventh, where he retired the side in order to secure the win. In total, the Lincoln Land CC signee punched out three in his outing, failing to allow a hit, while surrendering just a run. With the win, Edwardsville improves to 29-9 on the year and will play the winner of Minooka and Normal Community on Saturday at Illinois-Wesleyan for the Sectional Championship. O’Fallon finishes the season at 25-8.
