23 | Neuqua Valley | 5 | Plainfield North | 0 | Unfinished |
24 | By: Peter Hamot Area Scout, Staff Writer The Wildcats of Neuqua Valley matched up with the Tigers of Plainield North yesterday afternoon and were not able to finish the contest due to inclement weather. The game was called after three innings of play and saw Neuqua Valley ahead by the score of 5-0. The Wildcats scored all of their runs in the first inning, with Maryville commit Andrew Gould (2024) starting things off with a one out single. The Wildcats were then able to take advantage of four walks, a hit-by-pitch, fielder's choice and a costly throwing error to make the score 5-0 after the top of the first. Uncommitted junior RHP Daniel Cercello made a loud statement on the mound for the Wildcats. In rain and sub-50 degree weather, the 6-foot-7, 180-pound right-hander attacked Tigers hitters with a fastball that sat 92-93 mph early on, settling in at 88-91 mph out of the stretch and later in the game. He showed improved feel and arm-speed for his changeup which came in around 86 mph - also flashing a 10/4 slider at 83 mph which he occasionally got around on. Over his three innings of work, Cercello allowed just one hit, no runs and racked up seven strikeouts to pair with four walks - though his misses were still around the zone. RHP Kyle Demay, an uncommitted junior, was a bright spot for the Tigers on the mound. The right-hander entered the game with two outs in the top of the first inning and proceeded to shut down the Wildcats in order - finishing with 2.1 innings, no hits, no runs and no walks - striking out five. Demay worked with an up-tempo pace on the mound, getting the ball back from the catcher and immediately hopping back on the rubber. He worked a heavy sinking fastball up to 83 mph, sitting mostly around 80-81 mph and also featured a slurvy breaking ball at 71-72 mph and diving changeup at 76-77 mph. Demay showed a clear confidence in his entire arsenal, throwing all of his pitches whenever he wanted and in any count for strikes. Notable Performances: Kyle Demay (Plainfield North): 2.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 5 K, 0 BB Daniel Cercello (Neuqua Valley): 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 7 K, 4 BB Andrew Gould (Neuqua Valley): 1-for-2, R Luke Brown (Plainfield North): 1-for-2 | ||||
