24 | By: Peter Hamot Area Scout, Staff Writer No. 17 Cary-Grove squared off with No. 5 Huntley and saw the Trojans come away victorious in walk-off fashion. In the bottom of the seventh inning, sophomore Charlie Taczy stepped in and delivered a single to the left side to score Brendan Carter (2023) who singled earlier in the frame and tie the game at six apiece. The very next at-bat, Daniel Stauder (2023), who was hit by a pitch earlier, swiped home on a ball to the backstop, giving the Trojans the walk-off win. The Trojans entered the bottom of the fifth inning down 6-2, and were able to bring the score to 6-5 thanks to some errant pitching and patient at-bats, helping to mount the eventual comeback. In the top of the third inning for Huntley, Indiana commit Brayden Bakes (2023) helped kick-start a six run inning with a lead-off solo home run. AJ Putty (2025) would come up shortly after and drive home Joe Garlin (2023), who singled earlier in the frame, and make it 4-2 at the time. Lawrence commit CJ Filipek (2023) would plate another run with a single to make it 5-2. The Red Raiders would go on to add one more run on an error, bringing the score to 6-2 at the time. Huntley got out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first thanks to a double from South Carolina commit Ryan Bakes (2023) and an RBI single from Garlin, plating Bakes. The Trojans would answer right back in the bottom half of the inning, as Stauder would go on to deliver a two RBI single and give Cary-Grove a 2-1 lead at the time. The aforementioned Charlie Taczy played a pivotal role in the Trojans win. Not only did he deliver the game tying hit in the last inning, but he also came out of the ‘pen and fired 4.1 innings in which he didn’t allow a single hit or run, striking out four. The sophomore right-hander has all sorts of upside in his 6-foot, 145-pound frame. He worked his heavy sinking fastball up to 84 mph to pair with a 77-79 mph changeup, playing nearly identical to his fastball out of the hand and missing under barrels consistently. The Hornets got things going in the top of the second inning when Wilcox reached base on a hit-by-pitch. Derrick Wiles then singled in the next at-bat, and Carson Gates followed up with a bunt single. Wilcox scored on a wild pitch, and Ryan Mangold came to the plate and grounded out, scoring one run. The Turks scored one of their own in the bottom half of the second inning on a groundout RBI from TJ Connor (2023). In the bottom of the fourth inning, Blaine Williams (2025; Illinois) got things going for the Turks with a double down the left field line and eventually reached third base on a wild pitch. The following at-bat, Brady Booth (2025) doubled to the right-center gap, scoring Williams, and tying the game at 2-2. The Hornets added two more runs in the top of the fifth inning getting hits from Tanner Wiegand (2025), Drew Dingledine (2023), and Wilcox. Wiegand and Dingledine both scored in the inning giving Eureka the 4-2 lead. Slater Wilcox shut things down the rest of the way.
