There are some innuendo and nonspecific fantasies. A boy gives a girl permission to "pet my lizard anytime." 32 | 12/21/2022 12:33:15 | Stanovick | N | Printed Materials, Division approved primary instructional material | Romeo and Juliet | English 9 | 9 | Nudity | Romeo and Juliet--a part of the StudySync Curriculum--is a seminal work that is a rite of passage for high school students and their immersion in Shakespeare. In the play, Shakespeare's clever wordplay often includes references to body parts and sex acts -- the words "maidenhead" and "whore" are used creatively, for example. This bawdy language is often highlighted with physical gesturing when the play is staged, but the book is more clever than suggestive. Actual sex, other than kissing, takes place "off-screen," in that we only know Romeo and Juliet spend one night together as husband and wife because we see them part early the next morning. The themes of love and desire are important in building the conflicts in the piece. |

English 225 is a sophomore level college literature class which examines a set of literary texts linked by a particular theme, with inquiry into the historical, cultural, and/or social contexts of the texts and the theme. Emphasizes interpretive and critical analysis skills developed through close reading and intertextual study, as well as highlights an exploration of cultural ideas. Engages works of diverse genres, authors, and time periods. Specific themes will vary by section. This is a UCGS transfer course. Lecture 3 hours. Total 3 hours per week. 3 credits Prerequisite—ENG 112 or instructor approval. Also one of the books that has appeared on the suggested works list for student choice free-response questions at least twice since 2003 and is a solid option for the student choice essay. Winner of: Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, Anisfield-Wolf Book Award for Fiction, American Book Award. Beloved is rich in structural complexity and symbolism. Natural symbols such as trees (Sethe’s “choke cherry” scar, Denver’s box elder bushes, and the trees on Sweet Farm plantation) illustrate the contrast between the beauty and brutality of the natural world and the world of slavery. A haunting central section of the novel evokes the suffering of the Middle Passage, relating it imagistically to hell and the grave. Because the novel is based on the actual events of the life of Margaret Garner, an escaped slave who killed one of her own children, it can also be read in conjunction with nonfiction slave narrative accounts of the time. Beloved is widely recognized as a work of significant literary and artistic merit, for which it has been awarded the Pulitzer Prize; and, in 2006 named the “best work of American fiction of the last 25 years” by the New York Times Book Review. In addition, author Toni Morrison won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1993 for her collected works, and her writing has been called part of the "canon" of American literature. Beloved is widely taught in high schools and colleges around the country. Indeed, the school district would potentially put its students at an educational disadvantage in college if it did not introduce them to literature of this sort in high school. At the core of the play, Hamlet was a young person who was struggling with a very hard decision. Therefore, Shakespeare, although he existed years ago, deals with issues that we see around in our communities all the time. Some of these issues: revenge, family, and insanity. In particular, revenge and family are a part of the human condition – we connect with others, and sometimes we try to get back for wrongs that may have been done to us. Students will be better able to discuss these issues through this play, and see how even in a play written 500 years ago, with Kings and Queens, are connected to them. Hamlet is on the list of College Board's recommended texts and works for almost any free-response question. It is often ranked as the best play ever written; and it has all the romance, action, intrigue, wit, and drama that make for good old-fashioned entertainment. However, the two most significant reasons that Hamlet is the best play to teach are its capacity to pose great questions that are perennially challenging to answer and its ability to portray a universal vision of the human condition. His plays were not written as plays which had an immediate life as a published document. They were written very quickly and put on stage very quickly." Kenneth Branagh I do my best to avoid scenes with nudity; however, it is possible to miss the beginning of a scene. Students work on formative and summative assignments while watching the film and we do skip scenes. Most high school students read this play and the film helps them access the language and understand the themes. It is appropriate to see the film prior to reading the play or while it is being read. Shakespeare wrote for people to view his plays, not to only read them. The 1996 film version of ''Hamlet,'' starring Kenneth Branagh, is considered by many to be the best film version of Shakespeare's most famous play and is famous for being the only unabridged version of the play. Branagh makes bold choices that demonstrate his unique interpretation of the play. His directorial skill makes his Hamlet one of the most visually stunning Shakespeare films ever made. This includes widescreen exterior shots as well as bright, colorful interiors. The film includes gorgeous, epic visuals and interprets unresolved issues in the play, such as the nature of Hamlet and Ophelia's relationship. One of the reasons Shakespeare's plays remain so popular is that they leave themselves open for endless re-interpretation by actors, stage directors, and filmmakers like Branagh. This film is rated PG-13. 50 | 1/20/2023 10:20:35 | Ferraraccio | S. | Printed Materials, Division approved primary instructional material | Hamlet | DE/AP English 12/Engl. 245 & 225 | 12 | Nudity, Sexual Conduct | Shakespeare often seems outdated and out of this world to our students since he was writing almost 500 years ago. 51 | 1/20/2023 10:23:56 | Ferraraccio | S. | Printed Materials, Division approved primary instructional material | Oedipus Rex | English 10 Honors | 10 | Nudity, Sexual Conduct | Oedipus Rex by Sophocles (497–406 B.C.E.) is one of the foundational works of dramatic Western art. First performed at the religious festivals held as ceremonies of worship by the citizens of Athens, in 429 B.C.E., it depicts the tragic undoing of King Oedipus as he faces the dark secrets of his origins. It belongs to a trilogy of plays called the Theban plays, all set in the kingdom of Thebes and featuring the same characters: Oedipus; his daughters, Antigone and Ismene; and sons, Polynices and Eteocles. Sophocles is considered one of the most influential Greek playwrights in drama. His works portrayed tragic heroes, relationship to gods, responsibility to the state versus to family, and characters dealing with mental pressure. He also abandoned the common practice of presenting tragedies as trilogies often exploring the same subject. Oedipus Rex is perhaps the central work on the conflict between fate and free will, and lent its name to the inventor of modern psychology, Sigmund Freud, when he identified the Oedipus complex, the primal urge of a male child to kill his father and marry his mother. The play is continually in production somewhere on the planet. |

57 | 1/26/2023 10:09:12 | Ferraraccio | S. | Audiovisual (i.e. Motion Picture Film) | The Matrix | English 10 Honors | 10 | Nudity, Sexual Conduct | Plato's "Allegory of the Cave" is one of the most famous passages in the history of Western philosophy. It is a short excerpt from the beginning of book seven of Plato’s book, The Republic. Plato tells the allegory in the context of education; it is ultimately about the nature of philosophical education, and it offers an insight into Plato’s view of education (Lodhi). . Plato's Theory of Forms maintains that two distinct levels of reality exist: the visible world of sights and sounds that we inhabit and the intelligible world of Forms that stand above the visible world and gives it being. The Matrix, and all the humans in it are akin to the prisoners watching shadows on the cave wall. Plato says of a freed prisoner, “When he approaches the light his eyes will be dazzled, and he will not be able to see anything at all of what are now called realities.” Neo symbolizes the prisoner who escapes the cave and Morpheus the “instructor” Neo meets in the real world. Plato personifies the ‘unenlightenment’ of human nature through the allegory of prisoners chained in a cave whose entire perception of reality is but shadows cast on a wall in front of them. For Plato, the shadows on the wall are not reality but rather mere reflections of more real objects. The 1999 film The Matrix by the Wachowskis is largely Platonic; the film mirrors Plato's allegory almost exactly in structure using ancient philosophies about the truth behind reality, but the most central to the overarching framework of the film is adapted from Plato's "Allegory of the Cave." The film explores the journey of one man from the Matrix, a simulation ruled by deceitful robots, into the enlightenment of the ‘real world.’ While Plato’s skepticism of the existence of the external world seems to be at the forefront of the film, The Matrix also argues the anti-Platonic possibility that perhaps the Matrix isn’t any less real than the ‘real world’. |

Literature is a reflection of our reality and it gives students opportunities to expand their minds, challenge their own beliefs, and become informed about the consequences of decisions, all while encouraging critical thinking and exploration of our world. 78 | 8/6/2024 11:54:41 | Rupp | S. | Printed Materials | Stolen Focus by Johann Hari | AP/DE English Language and Composition | 11 | Sexual Conduct | This is a serious nonfiction text for a college-level course about nonfiction and argumentation. The genre of Stolen Focus is science writing. The text argues that cellphone use is negatively affecting attention spans. It gracefully incorporates multiple modes of writing to communicate its thesis, from anecdotes to analysis of scientific studies. I believe AP/DE students would benefit from reading this text given MCPS' new cellphone policy and because it encourages forming healthy habits. Sexual acts are not described in detail but two sexual acts are named within anecdotes: 1. The narrator uses his nephew as an example of how technology addiction has poorly affected a teenager's mental health. He describes his nephew's online activity in the following passage: "He dropped out of school when he was fifteen, and he spent literally almost all his waking hours at home alternating blankly through screens-- his phone, an infinite scroll of WhatsApp and Facebook messages, and his iPad, on which he watched a blur of YouTube and porn" (Hari 4). No further description of the sexual activity is included and the text moves on to describe how broken the nephew appears. The tone here is not encouraging of that aforementioned activity, but critical and sad. 2. The narrator is walking through a town after having given up cellphone use for a month. He briefly says: "...Artists started to move in, and it became a bohemian enclave. Then it became a gay destination. Today it is a place where, in old fisherman's cottages, there now live men whose full-time job is to dress as Ursula, the villain from The Little Mermaid, and sing songs about cunnilingus to the tourists who dominate the town in the summer" (Hari 25). No definition or further description of the above song is included, and the text moves on to the narrator's opinion of the town. |
79 | 8/6/2024 22:15:39 | Rupp | S. | Printed Materials | I Cheerfully Refuse by Leif Enger | AP/DE English Language and Composition | 11 | Sexual Conduct | This is a beautiful 2024 fictional novel about a man recovering from loss and finding community again. It takes place on the Great Lakes during a dystopian apocalypse. The text would be a good alternative for students to read instead of Cormac McCarthy’s The Road, which contains more graphic violence. The novel is told in the first person from a verbose protagonist. Reading a voicy author will help students learning to write their own narratives in this college-level composition class find their own voice. In the novel, the protagonist helps rescue a brave girl who has run away from an abusive man. It is implied that the man sexually assaulted her and possibly other women, but it isn’t described beyond the following lines of dialogue after she has escaped: "He smells and he’s awful he’s so heavy you can’t move," she added, an observation that hit worse every time I thought of it (172). "There used to be two older girls who weren’t his nieces either. He’d come in our room and touch one of them on the head or sometimes both and they’d get up and follow him away. One day they both went someplace else." By alluding to possible abuse, the reader understands why the character is motivated to run away. |

81 | 8/9/2024 9:58:11 | Rupp | S | Printed Materials | "Cathedral" by Raymond Carver | AP/DE Language and Composition | 11 | Sexual Conduct | Famous short story by American author Raymond Carver that's perfect in its craft. It's a first person narrative about a man who goes from being disgusted by a blind man to understanding. First person narratives are similar in structure to essays and help students understand voice and narrative structure in this college-level class. The narrator refers to the blind man's marriage and the fact he had normal marital sex with his late wife, which surprised him. "They’d married, lived and worked together, slept together—had sex, sure—and then the blind man had to bury her." That's the sexual content-- the acknowledgement that they had sex. This line shoes how little he thinks of the blind man, whose blindness he perceives as emasculation. |
82 | 8/9/2024 10:03:59 | Rupp | S | Printed Materials | "Story of your Life" by Ted Chiang | AP/DE Language and Composition | 11 | Sexual Conduct | This is another first person narrative about language, aliens, and grief. It's the story that the film Arrival is based off of. We are doing a unit on aliens and I want them to engage with this text for its complex narrative structure. The story opens with the narrator and her husband discussing wanting to have kids. The narrative jumps through time, using direct address of the narrator towards the child born from that discussion who dies in the narrative. The very last line of the story returns to answer the question: "Do you want to make a baby?" and the narrator replies, "Yes," and then it says that they walked inside to "make love." That's the extent of the sexual content-- the reference to marital procreative sex. |

The moral choices faced by the characters offer a platform for discussions on ethics, responsibility, and the impact of individual actions on society, encouraging students to reflect on their own values and decision-making. Additionally, the book is rich in literary elements, allowing students to enhance analytical and critical thinking skills that are in line with the 9th grade ELA standards. |
84 | 12/12/2024 10:39:52 | Ferraraccio | S. | Printed Materials, Audiovisual (i.e. Motion Picture Film), School and/or classroom purchased or created instructional material | Othello - film by Kenneth Branagh | DE/AP English Literature and Composition (245/225) | 12 | Nudity, Sexual Conduct | This is for use in a DE/AP class meant to replicate a sophomore level college literature course. Using Branagh's film adaptation of Othello, in addition to the script, is valuable because it allows students to explore complex themes like racism, jealousy, manipulation, and power dynamics, providing a platform to critically examine societal issues through the lens of a classic literary text, particularly highlighting the impact of racial prejudice on a protagonist and the destructive nature of unchecked suspicion; making it a relevant and thought-provoking study for contemporary audiences. These traits are not old-fashioned; they play prominent roles in today's world. Othello epitomizes the growth and results of these primal emotions; in addition, it has high pupil interest, and has something for everyone to think about and talk about. Othello, like all of Shakespeare’s plays, particularly the tragedies, is complex and subtly nuanced. Through its complexities and subtleties, Shakespeare makes us care about the characters who people this story. We understand their weaknesses and their strengths, their passions and their nobility. In our engagement in their lives and our pondering over what has gone wrong and why, we are given the opportunity to analyze human life both in the abstract and in the particular of our own lives. Shakespeare’s ability to involve us in the lives and fortunes of his characters is one of the best reasons for reading, rereading, and teaching Othello. It is a play about passion and reason. Intense feelings are exhibited here: love, hate, jealousy, envy, desire, etc. It is also a play that examines human relationships and interactions. For teenagers in the first rush of attempting to understand how romantic relationships work and when and why they might fail, this text provides much to ponder. In addition, studying the play gives young people a rich literary vehicle for developing their critical thinking and analytical reading skills. Using the film is important because Shakespeare is meant to be seen and not heard. Plays are, by nature, multi-sensory. Often, they are easier to understand if you can see the action and hear the words. Film is an audio-visual medium, working in real time; it operates in what Burn and Parker term the ‘kineiconic mode’ (Burn and Parker 2001, 2003). When a still image is set moving, there is more to consider: speech, music, action and camera movement. Pupils may explore the language of moving images within various media schemes of work [...] to explore and use these dynamic elements of film in the study of Shakespeare. The analysis of film makes pupils re-evaluate the print text, and look for complexities in it (Durran). Film...is a popular medium and by teaching young people the critical skills with which to deconstruct both directors' interpretations of Shakespeare's texts and the texts themselves, teachers have an opportunity to approach the subject afresh. The combination of classic texts reconstructed by modern filmmakers goes to the heart of the debate about the position of Shakespeare in schools and provides teachers with a rich source of stimulus material for their students (p.5) |
85 | 12/12/2024 13:04:44 | Ferraraccio | S. | Printed Materials | How to Read Literature Like a Professor (revised) by Thomas C. Foster | DE/AP English Literature and Composition (245/225) | 12 | Sexual Conduct | This is for use in a DE/AP class meant to replicate a sophomore level college literature course. How to Read Literature Like a Professor is a valuable tool for high school students because it teaches them to look beyond surface-level interpretations of literature, identifying recurring patterns, symbols, and archetypes, allowing them to analyze texts with deeper understanding and critical thinking skills, which are essential for literary analysis in higher education. Foster has stated that he had intended the book to be read by adults with non-traditional educational backgrounds who had struggled with understanding literary analysis. He decided to write the book after he discovered the hesitancy and reluctance that students had in carrying out analysis. He found that his students required a little guidance, and confidence to carry out insightful and interesting literary analysis independently. The book received wide appreciation and it was included in the high school and AP literature curriculum of schools across the country which has now led to the book being most widely read by high school students. In some chapters, Foster argues that even when explicit sexual content is present in literature, it's often not meant to be read solely at face value; instead, it serves as a symbolic tool to explore deeper themes related to character development, power dynamics, or societal issues, making the "coded" depiction of sex more impactful than a literal description. For example, he discusses the archetype of the vampire that pervades literature and breaks down the features of the character that crops up in so many different forms. He explains how Gothic figures like Dracula and other ghosts were used by writers to reference sex which was a taboo at the time. There isn't explicit content in every chapter, but there is some discussion in a few chapters. |
