The challenge for the students is to see how a three-page short story can become a 90 minute film and to assess the validity of the adaptation. This is a composition course and this is one of the tasks required.

She begins to undress but ends up passing out before any sexual acts occur.

Born A Crime is a coming of age story that any teen can relate to; it is important because it helps students learn about life, growing up, and what the world is like in places other than where they live. Reading stories like Noah's thoughtfully, and drawing conclusions about what has been read, is much more useful that shielding kids from the reality of world.

In her memoir, Jeanette Walls discusses honestly and openly the struggles of poverty and abuse in American life. Her coming of age story is relatable, brilliant, and eye opening. Her book is a reflection of the reality that many American children facing poverty and abuse suffer, and it gives students opportunities to expand their minds, challenge their own beliefs, and become informed about the consequences of decisions, all while encouraging critical thinking and exploration of our world. Reading stories like Walls' The Glass Castle, thoughtfully, in a safe environment, where students are encouraged to explore a world both similar and different from their own, and drawing conclusions about what has been read, is much more useful that shielding kids from the reality of our world. Students need to learn how to be compassionate, caring, and understanding of others, and that starts with reading.

The do not ALL contain sexually explicit material, but some do. They are selected based on their placement on the New York Times Best Seller list, selection for young adult literature awards, student requests, and critically acclaimed authorship. I also send a letter home with each student at the beginning of every year that explains the importance of student independent choice reading. It requires that parents sign and return the letter if they will allow their child to select their own reading material for independent reading assignments in English 10. It also offers a collaboration between, parents, their child, and myself to curate a list of titles that are representative of the family's beliefs and values and, therefore, available for student use. A central goal of writing is to establish a reading habit in the busy lives of high school students. In order to bring back that love of reading, research shows that choice is invaluable in the process. When students increase their volume of reading, there is an exponential increase in written expression, vocabulary, reading speed, fluency, comprehension, and confidence.
