18 | I am part of a team that creates short (about 30 minute) language practice. I am guided by a template but add in extra content or delete irrelevant content if necessary. I have created a few OER activities approved by the team leader of the World Languages Resource Center Director of Boise State University. A few of the themes of the activities are Deaf Educational Law, Deaf Inclusion, Deaf Family Dynamics, Deaf Theatre, Interpreting, Deaf Art, and Laws and Politics concerning the Deaf. Our main focus is on encouraging students to speak in the language. Therefore, our lab assistants (those who facilitate the short language practice) have a fairly limited role to allow students to get the most time practicing discussions and conversations in the language. Our team plans on adding more Deaf culture related activities in the future that will exceed the skill level currently uploaded to OER Commons. Currently, our team is working on ASL 101, 201, and 301 activities which covers Novice through Advanced ACTFL standards. Because our team is associated with Boise State University and our activities are mainly focused on enhancing the student's full language course, we initially start with the professor's syllabus and the textbooks used in their classes (Signing Naturally 1, 2, and 3). However, we occasionally add in cultural information to give students a full experience in the language. |
