| According to multiple sources, single hairline cracks in the screens of iPhones and Apple Watches are no longer covered under Apple’s standard warranty. These claims are now being processed as “accidental damage” which require users to pay to be repaired. Apple’s old policy covered instances of single hairline crack damage under the standard warranty for iPhone and Apple Watch users, so long as there was no visible other damage or a clear point of impact on the device that caused the crack. Apple hasn’t given a specific reason for the change in policy, but, updates went out this week to Apple Stores and Authorized Service Providers notifying them that single hairline cracks are no longer covered by warranty. | https://www.theverge.com/2024/6/6/24172866/iphone-apple-watch-hairline-crack-warranty
| Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports that Apple plans to build a password management app right into the next versions of the iPhone and Mac operating systems that will work similarly to third-party password managers like 1Password and LastPass. The new app will be revealed next week at WWDC. Apple already generates and stores unique passwords through iCloud Keychain which syncs across all Apple devices and Windows PCs via browser extension. A dedicated app, however, might make passwords easier to find, as, iCloud Keychain stores them in the settings app. | https://9to5mac.com/2024/06/05/iphone-screen-repair-warranty/

| Amazon denies claims levied by a whistleblower that the company violated UK sanctions by selling facial recognition tech to Russia following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Charles Forrest alleged that he was unfairly dismissed in 2023 after accusing Amazon of wrongdoing on a number of issues between November 2022 and May 2023. The allegations were presented in a hearing in front of a London employment tribunal where Forrest said Amazon closed a deal with Russian firm VisionLabs to provide access to its Rekognition facial recognition technology and did so "through what appears to be a shell company based in the Netherlands". Amazon denied the allegations, stating, "We believe the claims lack merit and look forward to demonstrating that through the legal process." | https://www.engadget.com/whistleblower-claims-amazon-violated-uk-sanctions-by-selling-facial-recognition-tech-to-russia-125001230.html?src=rss
| In other Amazon news, the British Independent Retailers Association (BIRA) said it is filing a damages claim valued at $1.3 billion alleging that Amazon has illegally misused members’ proprietary data for competitive purposes. BIRA also claims that Amazon manipulated which retailers were selected for Amazon’s “Buy Box” prime placement. BIRA and its legal team say that the claim is the biggest ever collective action to be launched by retailers in the country and the complaint will be filed at the Competition Appeal Tribunal in London. | https://techcrunch.com/2024/06/06/uk-retailers-file-a-1-1b-collective-action-against-amazon-over-claims-of-data-misuse/

| A U.S. federal court has allowed K-pop group NewJeans to subpoena Google for information about a YouTube account so that it may sue the user for defamation under South Korean law. NewJeans filed an ex parte application in late March in the Northern District of California for an “order authorizing limited discovery” of the user’s data from Google “for use in a criminal matter in Korea.” New Jeans alleges that the YouTube account @Middle7 posted as many as 33 defamatory videos that had been viewed nearly 14 million times. U.S. District Judge P. Casey Pitts authorized the subpoena and the limited discovery to be obtained from Google Because NewJeans’ request follows legal precedent, Google is not party to the lawsuit, and the breadth of the request is not unreasonable. | https://www.404media.co/newjeans-kpop-google-youtube-lawsuit/
| And finally, Netflix is testing a major homepage redesign on its TV app. The new look replaces the static tiles containing the shows and movies you want to watch with boxes that extend as soon as your remote lands on them. Hover over a TV show or movie long enough, and Netflix will begin playing a short preview directly within the tile. Netflix will test the new homepage among a small group of subscribers using smart TVs and other streaming devices to start but could expand to more members if it works out. | https://www.theverge.com/2024/6/6/24172351/netflix-redesign-homepage-experience-test
