6 | Amid escalating U.S.-China tensions, Microsoft is asking 700 to 800 employees in its China-based cloud computing and artificial intelligence operations to consider transferring outside the country. The staff, mostly engineers with Chinese nationality involved in machine learning, were given the opportunity to relocate to the U.S., Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand. 8 | The European Commission has launched a formal investigation into Meta to determine if the social media giant has violated the Digital Services Act by contributing to children's social media addiction and not ensuring high safety and privacy levels. The Commission will specifically examine whether Meta is properly assessing and acting against risks brought on by its platforms' interfaces. Investigators will look into how well Meta protects young users from harmful content. 9 | Google has fixed the third actively exploited Chrome zero-day vulnerability in a week, the seventh this year. In a security advisory published on Wednesday Google said it, “is aware that an exploit for CVE-2024-4947 exists in the wild”. 14 | An international study at the University of Oxford has found that links between internet adoption and well-being are likely to be positive, despite popular concerns to the contrary. In the study researchers at the Oxford Internet Institute encompassed more than two million participants' psychological well-being from 2006-2021 across 168 countries. Eight indicators of well-being were studied including life satisfaction and daily negative and positive experiences. 15 | Microsoft has announced the Proteus Controller for Xbox gamers with disabilities. The customizable controller is expected to ship in the fall for $299.
