| Despite all the hype and marketing Microsoft and Qualcomm are putting into new “AI PCs” including the Copilot+ PC, the industry research firm IDC only expects 3% of PCs shipped this year to meet Microsoft’s processing power threshold to be considered an AI PC. The problem is that application makers beyond Microsoft haven’t added features to their apps that take advantage of internal chips optimized for AI tasks, instead opting to deliver AI features through the cloud. Mass adoption of AI PCs will take years and isn’t expected to hit 40% of new machines sold until 2028. There isn’t an appetite for big application developers today to add features to products most customers cannot take advantage of. | https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-07-08/qualcomm-microsoft-lean-on-ai-hype-to-spur-pc-market-revival?embedded-checkout=true
| Podcasters on Spotify will have a new way to interact with listeners as the platform is adding comments to podcasts on the streaming service. Comments will be private by default and must be individually approved before they appear. They can also be enabled at the show or episode level. Comments, however, are opt-out, so if you don’t want them enabled, you must do work to turn them off. Comments are available Tuesday in the Spotify for Podcasters web app and are being rolled out to the mobile app over the next few days. | https://www.theverge.com/2024/7/9/24194612/spotify-podcast-comments
| The United States Federal Trade Commission has, for the first time, banned an app from serving users under the age of 18. The FTC accused NGL, a popular app among children and teens, of aggressively marketing itself to young users despite the risks of bullying on the anonymous messaging site. In a complaint filed by the FCC and the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office, the agencies alleged that NGL, short for “Not Gonna Lie” tricked users into buying subscriptions for a “bait-and-switch” scheme that NGL laughed off when customers complained referring to them as “suckers”. NGL agreed to pay $5 million in fines and stop marketing to kids and teens to settle the lawsuit. | https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2024/07/09/ftc-bans-kids-ngl-messaging-app/
| EV maker Lucid Motors delivered 2,394 vehicles in the second quarter setting a new company record for quarterly deliveries as it tries to establish a foothold in the still-growing market for electric vehicles. Historically, the Lucid Air has hovered close to or exceeded the $100,000 price tag, but recent cuts have moved those prices down significantly, with the base model now starting at $69,900. | https://techcrunch.com/2024/07/08/lucid-motors-q2-deliveries-shipped-air-sedan/
| To compete with Temu and Amazon, Etsy, the online shopping platform known for hand-made items, has announced four new classifications for items for sale on the platform: “made by,” “designed by,” “handpicked by,” and “sourced by.” The popular Vintage items category will now fall under “handpicked by”. Etsy has differentiated itself from other marketplaces like Amazon or Temu, emphasizing itself as a place to find unique items made by an artisan or selected by a curator. But over the years, the company has loosened its rules around what exactly counts as “handmade.” The introduction of new categories is a way to try to assure shoppers that they’re purchasing something created or selected by a person. | https://www.theverge.com/2024/7/9/24190843/etsy-handmade-vintage-policy-change
| Just weeks after Meta abandoned its plans to use EU user's Facebook and Instagram posts to train its AI, Brazil's national data protection agency said it would immediately suspend Meta's latest privacy policy, which allows the company to train generative AI models such as chatbots based on posts from Brazilan users. A Meta spokesperson told the BBC the company was "disappointed by the decision", adding that their approach complied with local privacy laws. | https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c7291l3nvwvo
| As mentioned in Monday’s Daily Tech News Show, Microsoft ordered employees in China to stop using Android devices for work as it will start blocking network access on Android devices in Septemeber. Microsoft will require employees based in China to use Apple Inc. devices to verify their identities when logging in according to an internal memo reviewed by Bloomberg News. The problem with Android for Microsoft is that Google Play isn’t available in China making it difficult to keep those devices updated. | https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-07-08/microsoft-orders-china-staff-to-switch-from-android-phones-to-iphones-for-work?embedded-checkout=true
