|:31||TM||Let's start with a few tech things you should know...|
|SL||Microsoft Windows head Terry Myerson wrote a blog post describing how the Spectre Variant 2 patches will slow things down for Windows users. If you're running Windows 10 on Skylake, Kaby Lake or newer the slowdown is in the single-digit milliseconds. Windows 10 running Haswell may notice and Windows 7 and 8 on Haswell will notice slower performance.||https://www.theverge.com/2018/1/9/16868290/microsoft-meltdown-spectre-firmware-updates-pc-slowdown|
|tm||Microsoft has paused Meltdown and Spectre security updates for AMD machines after several users reported booting problems and UI elements like the start button disappearing. Microsoft blamed a problem in documentation from AMD. Microsoft has a fix to get the machines bootable again.||https://www.theverge.com/2018/1/9/16867068/microsoft-meltdown-spectre-security-updates-amd-pcs-issues|

|sl||Sources tell The Information that political pressure caused AT&T to back out of a deal with Huawei to sell its phones in the US. Huawei will go ahead selling phones in the US but without a carrier partner.||https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2018/01/political-pressure-reportedly-kills-huaweiatt-smartphone-deal/|
|tm||Dell officially announced new XPS 15 convertible featuring the 8th-gen Intel CPU, Radeon RX Vega M GL graphics card and Windows Hello support available in April starting at $1,299. |sl||China’s Vivo is officially the first smartphone to use a fingerprint sensor under the main display. Vivo uses the new Synaptics optical sensor which uses gaps between pixels in an OLED display to scan your print. Synaptics and Samsung were likely working together for the Galaxy S8 last year but didn't have the technology ready in time.||https://www.theverge.com/circuitbreaker/2018/1/9/16867536/vivo-fingerprint-reader-integrated-display-biometric-ces-2018|
|tm||The WiFi alliance, which certifies products for WiFi compatibility, is working on a replacement for the WPA2 security protocol, called WPA3. The alliance says WPA3 will simplify the process for configuring devices without a display, add individualized data encryption on open networks and add a 192-bit security suite aligned with the Commercial National Security Algorithm (CNSA) Suite from the Committee on National Security Systems. Devices with WPA3 should start arriving later this year. Manufacturers will decide whether to update existing devices, which would require them to recertify.||https://thenextweb.com/gadgets/2018/01/09/wpa3-is-coming-this-year-to-enhance-wi-fi-router-security/|

|sl||Google announced it is working with JBL, Lenovo and Sony to launch smart devices with "smart displays" later this year. They'll handle things as Google Assistant normally handles things, plus Google will open a platform for developers to write their own Actions. You'll also get the same notifications you got in Google Now. And you can cast videos to the displays. Lenovo will charge $199 for its 8-inch and $249 for its ten-inch smart displays. No price info from JBL or Sony but JBL will start selling its version this summer. Google assistant is also coming to Android Auto, headphones from JBL, LG and Sony and more Android TV makers. It also uses the phone's speakers. The docs provides 200 GB of extra storage , batteries and the larger display. |
As for launching products Razer has the Razer Mamba HyperFlux mouse and powermat. Razer's Hyperflux uses a magnetic field to deliver power in real-time rather than charging up a battery. Basically each panel connects together and it doesn’t matter which panel you connect where or how big many you have. I’m not sure if you need a device to drive the display or if you could just set them up as mutable displays. And I could not see a seam when it was turned on but I was some distance from it at the time.|
