The Google Assistant has supported Spanish for some time, but is now available through the Home, Home Mini, or Home Max after rolling out over the last two weeks. Three localized versions of Spanish are available: one for Spain, Mexico, and the US. Google is also launching its spanish enabled smart devices in Mexico starting today. |:33||tm||The Wi-Fi Alliance has begun certifying products that support WPA3, the successor to the WPA2 security protocol that’s been in use since 2004. WPA3 comes with additional protections for devices connected over Wi-Fi, making it harder for anyone to crack passwords, and limits what data hackers can see even if they do. New routers and gadgets that support WPA3 will get these new protections, and some older devices can be updated as well. That's up to your device maker. Devices that support WPA3 can still connect with devices that use WPA2||https://www.theverge.com/circuitbreaker/2018/6/26/17501594/wpa3-wifi-security-certification|
|:35||sl||Mozilla announced it's testing a Firefox feature called Firefox Monitor, a security tool that uses Troy Hunt’s ‘Have I Been Pwned‘ (HIBP) database. Users can search by their email address from within the browser and possibly set up alerts if you're account gets compromised. Firefox Monitor will let users know the extent of the personal data exposed, and offer tips on how to secure their account. The Firefox Monitor tool rolls out next week to around 250,000 users. 1Password is also integrating the Have I Been Pwned database into the Breach Reports feature of its web-based version and will eventually add it to the desktop app as well.||https://thenextweb.com/security/2018/06/26/mozilla-bakes-have-i-been-pwned-into-firefoxs-new-privacy-tool/?utm_source=reddit|

One of the issues was how Uber was monitoring and reporting complaints on the platform, and how it shares those complaints to the police in cases when they related to criminal activity. Another issue was if Uber had been trying to evade regulatory scrutiny. Transport for London said it will "closely monitor Uber’s adherence to the regulations and to swiftly take action if they fail to meet the required standards." Uber says it will, "continue to work with TfL to address their concerns and earn their trust."||https://techcrunch.com/2018/06/26/uber-wins-appeal-and-gets-a-provisional-15-month-license-to-operate-in-london/|

Using open source machine learning from Carnegie Mellon, it looks for suspicious movements in a store and alerts shopkeepers when it thinks it has detected it. NTEE East admits it isn't perfect, acknowledging common errors include misidentifying indecisive customers or employees restocking shelves. No studies have been done on its accuracy. NTT hopes to introduce it into 10,000 stores in the next three years. AI Guardman goes on sale in Japan in July for $2,150 and $40 a month.||https://www.theverge.com/2018/6/26/17479068/ai-guardman-security-camera-shoplifter-japan-automated-surveillance|

|Cost of 5G?|
- NTT DOCOMO CTO Seizo Inoe in 2016 at IEEE in Kuala Lumpur said high cost is a myth. 5G will use existing towers and backhaul.
- Verizon's soon-to-be-CEO Hans Vestberg estimates the cost at $200-$400 per home passed, saying its massively cheaper than fiber.
- mmWave reach is proving to be 300-700 meters. Previous estimates were for 200 meters.
- High-frequency 5G signals sibject to interference from trees and rain. Requires some different locations for cells vs. LTE.
-Frank Rayal believes coverage problems will mean operators will have to pay more to deploy 5G than they did 4G.
Up to 10 gbps
But T-Mobile intends to launch with 400Mbps
- reduce end-to-end latency from between 50 and 80 milliseconds to a single millisecond
- 1,000 times more bandwidth per unit area and/or the ability to support between 10 to 100 times more connected devices
- 90% reduction in network energy usage
- 5G will let people stream "8K" video in 3-D
- download a 3-D movie in about 6 seconds. On 4G, it would take 6 minutes.
- In Qualcomm's real-world simulation for shared infrastructure with LTE, Browsing jumped from 56 Mbps for the median 4G user to more than 490 Mbps for the median 5G user in one test and up to 1.4 Gbps in another.

On GDI episode 3310 you were talking about whether things are generally improving for humans as tech advances, and while Tom was saying yes, Roger was a little more pessimistic. This group https://www.gapminder.org/ has some really interesting TED talks and data tools on their site that show that globally things definitely get better as time goes on. The patriarch of the group also wrote a really interesting book called “Factfullness” that talks about why humans tend to get things so wrong. Their recommendations remind me of how Tom tackles breaking tech stories without getting wrapped up in the drama and hype. Anyway, I thought you’d appreciate what they say. Thanks for being awesome.
