|Let's talk a little more about...|
|:33||tm||Here are the allegations facing Facebook as of Friday morning. |
- Brazil has fined Facebook $33 million for failing to hand over data from the WhatsApp application which Facebook says it can't hand over since WhatsApp messages are fully encrypted.
- Facebook has halted discussions with hospitals about using data to improve patient health and health research.
- Six organizations in Myanmar signed a letter that Facebook's response to hate speech there, used as an example by Zuckerberg in an interview with Vox, was slow and largely powered by local reporting, not Facebook's system.
- Privacy protection agencies in Canada and its province of British Columbia are combining their investigations into ad-targeting company AggregateIQ and Facebook.
- In addition to an appearance at the US House of Representatives April 11, Zuckerberg will appear before a US Senate joint committee April 10.
Facebook announced that any entity buying an ad about 'issues' will have to be verified, and their ads will be labeled "Political Ad" with a disclosure about who paid for it.
OK but the one getting the most attention is this one: Three sources told TechCrunch that old messages from Mark Zuckerberg were removed from their messenger accounts. Facebook told TechCrunch that messages from executives have a limited retention time as a security measure put in place after the Sony Pictures hack in 2014. Facebook says all users will soon get the ability to unsend Messages and Zuckerberg will not use the feature himself, again, until it is available to everyone.
|:36||sl||Snapchat is releasing the iPhone X-exclusive AR Snapchat lenses Friday. The three lenses are a Mardi Gras-like mask, a Day of the Dead skull, and a gold-plated eye cover. Snapchat will have access to some visual facial mapping data to make the lenses work but Apple says the mathematical representation of a person's face is not shared.||https://www.theverge.com/2018/4/6/17203856/snapchat-iphone-x-ar-lense-truedepth-camera|
|:38||tm||Samsung says it expects Q1 revenue to rise 18.7% to 60 trillion won. The earnings are driven by chip sales and strong mobile phone sales led by the Galaxy S9. However NAND prices have been falling and an expected increase in RAM supply may also drive prices down leading analysts to expect Samsung's earnings to slow or fall in Q2. Samsung reports its actual Q1 earnings in April. Meanwhile South Korean prosecutors searched Samsung's offices Friday investigating allegations that the company undermined workers' efforts to strengthen unions.||https://www.reuters.com/article/us-samsung-elec-results/samsung-electronics-tips-record-first-quarter-profit-as-chip-boom-winds-down-idUSKCN1HC30R|
|:40||sl||LG expects its Q1 operating profit to rise 20% year over year to its highest in 9 years. LG is the number 2 TV maker in the world behind Samsung, so TV sales as well as home appliances are likely to be the driver, though LG did not give details in its filing. However, mobile phones are expected to post a loss for LG.||https://www.reuters.com/article/us-lg-elec-results/lg-electronics-tips-highest-first-quarter-profit-since-2009-idUSKCN1HD0N5?feedType=RSS&feedName=technologyNews|
|:42||tm||Huawei's P20 and P20 Pro are now available via Vodafone UK online and in retail stores. The first reviews are in and the praise is universally great for the camera, especially it's nighttime photos. Also the 4,000 mAh battery and it's two day battery life seems to be a real crowd pleaser. The negatives include the notch, and some of the other design choices.||https://www.tomsguide.com/us/huawei-p20-pro-review-roundup,news-26923.html|

|:45||accessible tech conference just happened a few months ago. Was going to talk about the trends in accessibility tech plus trends in devices.|
|CSUN Assistive Technology Conference||http://www.csun.edu/cod/conference/2018/sessions/index.php/|
|- The takeaway is that lots of new and updated wearables are coming online, many based on Android. |
- I also talk about services like Aira (BeMyEyes is another) that offer human assistance via a streaming camera to blind/low-vision people.
That’s been around for more than a year, but Aira now has its own glasses and associated tech, again, based on an Android phone.
- Seeing AI, Microsoft’s very cool app that uses machine-learning to provide a variety of descriptive info from your phone. That was released in July and it’s a massive hit in the community.
In blindness tech, there are a lot of innovations in Braille devices (cheaper or more flexible).
We could also do a bit of a checkin on how the big companies (Google, Amazon, Apple, Microsoft) are actually progressing with accessibility. Spoiler alert: Microsoft particularly is nipping at Apple’s heals in significant ways.)
Happy to talk about any subset of these. Also, I’d plug the iOS 11 version of my iOS accessibility book.
Thanks, and holler with any questions.

|sl||I heard your brief discussion about AI in war / combat scenarios with Justin and it reminded me of the book The Last Good Man by Linda Nagata.|
This is a near future military sci-fi book that is exploring warfare in the age of AI. It’s not for everyone but I think this is where sci-fi is at its conceptual best - exploring the hard future trends and entertaining us. I recommend this book and everything else by Nagata since this is a frequent topic in her books.
Keep up the good work!
