|Cecilia D'Anastasio has an excellent article on Kotaku digging into the topic of Gaming Addiction.|
She tells the story of several people including Cam who has been "game sober" for seven and a half years after almost committing suicide because he couldn't stop.
Experts still debate whether excessive gaming is a compulsion, an addiction, or a symptom of an underlying issue.
Gambling was classified as a compulsion and impulse control issue in the 1980s but in 2013 the DSM reclassified it as "gambling disorder" under behavioral addictions. The first non-substance based addiction recognised.
Behavioral or substance
- increasingly usage to get effect
- symptoms of withdrawal
This year Gaming Disorder was added to the WHO's International classification of diseases.
“characterized by impaired control over gaming, increasing priority given to gaming over other activities to the extent that gaming takes precedence over other interests and daily activities, and continuation or escalation of gaming despite the occurrence of negative consequences.”
Habits must impact social, educational, and occupational lives for about a year.
|Not common - (A recent metaanalysis including 19,000 subjects concluded that a very small proportion of the general population (between 0.3% and 1.0%) might qualify for a potential acute diagnosis |
Addicts say it's not defiined by time but the inability to log off no matter what.
Several people Kotaku interviewed felt that gaming was a symptom of a larger problem and some had been addicts of other substances before getting into gaming.
“It’s perfectly clear to me that I have one condition that involves all these things: obsessive compulsive, denial, hiding, lying about it, the fears, the crazy thinking, the irritability if I’m staying away, the mental cravings and urges, the distorted thinking. In my 20s, I tried to numb it out with drinking. In my 30s, I numbed out with gaming. The idea that they’re two different conditions doesn’t make any sense. It doesn’t match my experience at all.”
Dr. Douglas Gentile, psychologist and Iowa State University’s Media Research Lab found gaming addiction sometimes precedes things like depression. Says it's chiken and egg
Gamequitters.com support group for video game addiction. Every couple of weeks, Cam receives hate mail, harassment or death threats because he runs GameQuitters.

|tm||I'm definitely of the opinion the California Online Cancellation Law is needed. I've personally been on development teams where the online cancellation feature has be de-prioritized in order not to hurt growth of a new service. Management knows they will eventually have to do it, but it can often be put off for several years. They know the phone call is enough of a barrier to discourage cancellation for some people. This often works for services that have a low monthly fee, say $10 or less per month. And the real kicker is an online cancellation button is usually extremely easy to develop.|
