The story starts with Securus, is a service that allows police officers to facilitate calls made to inmates, but also pinpoint the location of a cell phone.
Securus gets this location info from the carrier, but appears to use a middle-man called "LocationSmart." which can pinpoint real-time location in about 15 seconds.
The Electronic Communications Privacy Act prevents carriers from sharing user location to the United States government, but there aren't any restrictions in place on other companies.
The FCC's been asked to investigate the matter by Democratic Senator Ron Wyden.
|:42||SL||Moscow-based Kaspersky Lab plans to open a data center in Switzerland by the end of 2019 to alleviate Western government concerns that Russian intelligence uses its anti-virus software to spy on customers. The facility would be based in Zurich, and Kaspersky says it chose Switzerland for its "policy of neutrality" and strong data protection laws. Reuters first reported the impending move back in March. Last year the US lordered civilian government agencies to remove Kaspersky software from their networks, although Kaspersky has denied accusations and filed a lawsuit against the U.S. ban.||https://www.cnbc.com/2018/05/15/kaspersky-lab-to-open-swiss-data-center-to-combat-spying-allegations.html|

|SL||Twitter says it will now use thousands of behavioral signals when filtering search, replies, and algorithmic recommendations. and anyone who seems to be gaming the system of just overall being negative will get their tweets buried. |
- Twitter will now look at whether you tweet at large numbers of accounts you don’t follow, how often you’re blocked by people you interact with, whether you created many accounts from a single IP address, and whether your account is closely related to others that have violated its terms of service.
- Twitter won’t remove the tweets from Twitter, it said, but they will now be moved to the “see more replies” section of a conversation, where they are hidden behind an additional tap.
- CEO Jack Dorsey said back in March that Twitter wants to create overall healthier conversations.
- A test of the new approach to ranking found that the number of abuse reports generated from conversations declined by 8 percent, the company said.
- Twitter issued a request for proposals from researchers and academics to help the company measure the health of public conversations on the site. The company received 230 such proposals,

|sl||Alright time to check the mailbag|
|sl||we got this from an anonymous certified apple technician who writes:|
I have to join the frustrated masses regarding the new MacBook keyboards. I think Apple is misguided in its quest to make computers as impractically thin as possible. Actual users aren't asking for this, what they want is what Apple keeps taking away: ports, battery life, expandability, and repairability.
Apple has moved from being a joy to repair to a nightmare. Batteries evolved from a tool-less user-replaceable item to being glued in. Hard drives evolved from standard, to proprietary (when smaller standard SSDs existed) to being soldered-on. Memory evolved from being removable to soldered on, even on the Mac Mini. The software/OS side of things isn't much better.
It is both surprising and disheartening just how user-hostile Apple progresses to be towards its own users. It has gotten to the point where I not only cannot recommend Apple products to friends and family, but have actively migrated many users to different manufacturers
