|tm||Scientists at Newcastle University in the UK have discovered a different form of 3D vision that may be easier to implement in robotics. First they used beeswax to put tiny 3D glasses on praying mantises. They found that mantises track the change in relative position of a moving object to each eye in order to create stereo vision. Humans use differences in multiple details. Because it's a simpler system that can be handled by a mantis's less complex brain, it would require much less computation power for robots.||https://techcrunch.com/2018/02/09/researchers-discovered-a-new-kind-of-stereo-vision-by-putting-tiny-3d-glasses-on-mantises/?ncid=rss|

|How we got here|
- Anthonly Levandowski worked for Google's self-driving car effort that later became Waymo.
- Levandowski allegedly took more than 14,000 confidential files in December 2015 - a simple engeineer checking out his own code? Or a nefarious plot to steal trade secrets? Were they even trade secrets? The jury was to decide.
- Uber executives met with Levandowski January 14, 2016. Just an employee seeking potential change of employment or a dastardly scheme to rip off Google and sell to the highest bidder? Again Jury was to decide.
- Levandowski founded 280 Systems (later to become Otto) January 15, 2016.
- Levandowski quit Google without notice on January 27, 2016.
- Uber acquired Otto in August 2016. It denies it ever received any of Waymo's trade secrets from Levandowski
- December 13, 2016, a Waymo employee is inadvertently copied on an email from a third-party vendor that includes Machine drawings of Uber's lidar circuit board.
- Waymo sued Uber February 23, 2017
- Levandowski was fired in May 2017 after he declined to waive his 5th Ammendment rights.
- Travis Kalanick stepped down as CEO in June 2017, then stepped down as Board Chairman
- Trial began Feb.5, 2018.
- Announced by Judge Alsup shortly before 5th day of testimony was set to begin. Case is now dismissed.
- Levandowski had been scheduled to take the stand on Monday.
- Uber will give Waymo 0.34% of its equity, worth about $245 million right now. (This in addition to a previous investment in Uber made in 2013)
- Uber Promises “to ensure that any Waymo confidential information is not being incorporated in Uber Advanced Technologies Group hardware and software.”
- CEO Kosroshawhi said “While we do not believe that any trade secrets made their way from Waymo to Uber, nor do we believe that Uber has used any of Waymo’s proprietary information in its self-driving technology, we are taking steps with Waymo to ensure our Lidar and software represents just our good work.”
The U.S. Department of Justice is conducting a separate, criminal investigation into the trade secrets.
Due diligence when acquiring startups. Companies will need to improve processes involved with acquiring start ups so they aren't suspected of stealing intellectual property. Start up culture of states like California: will a hiring department still be interested in hiring potential employees from a competitor if they run the risk of trade secret lawsuits?
Security implications of intellectual property and acquisition of not only employees, but the software / data they've had access to.
