| sl | Yesterday we passed along a report from The Information that OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is working with former Apple designer Jony Ive to build a hardware device. Today, the Financial Times' sources say OpenAI is in advanced talks with Ive and SoftBank’s Masayoshi Son to launch a consumer device described as the “iPhone of artificial intelligence”. The hope, reportedly, is to create a more natural and intuitive user experience for interacting with AI. | https://www.ft.com/content/4c64ffc1-f57b-4e22-a4a5-f9f90a7419b7

| sl | Apple launched a new iPhone Wallet beta feature for UK users, which lets them see their current account balance, recent deposits and payments, and balances after using Apple Pay. The new features use the UK's Open Banking API and follow Apple's acquisition of a company called Credit Kudos - which uses Open Banking to give users a snapshot of their financial health and credit score. Banks including Barclays, HSBC, Lloyds, RBS, Monzo, and Starling are all on board, and this integration is rolling out first as part of the upcoming iOS 17.1 developer beta. | https://www.engadget.com/apple-wallet-can-now-show-uk-users-their-bank-account-balances-113554313.html

| sl | Apple and Epic just can't seem to get along. Here's the latest, Apple has asked the US Supreme Court to review a judge’s ruling from two years ago that deemed developers should be able direct users to alternative payment methods other than Apple's App Store, where Apple takes a 30% cut of all sales of digital goods and services. Epic, maker of Fortnite, doesn't think it should pay that fee. This follows Wednesday's news of Epic initially asking the same Supreme Court to weigh in on the ongoing dispute. | https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2023-09-28/apple-asks-supreme-court-to-reverse-app-store-ruling-won-by-epic
| rd | Epic Games sued Apple back in 2020 after Apple kicked Epic out of the App Store for violating Apple’s rules. Initial rulings and appeals on the suit have mostly favored Apple but a federal judge did rule that Apple violated California’s Unfair Competition Law by restricting developers from telling consumers about alternative payment options. We’re probably not going to know if the SCOTUS will select the case for a few months based on the SCOTUS schedule. | https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2023-09-27/apple-app-store-ruling-challenged-at-supreme-court-by-epic-games

| sl | In other Epic news, CEO Tim Sweeney is also confirming reports that the company is laying off 830 employees, or about 16% of its workforce. Sweeney also says Epic will divest from indie music storefront Bandcamp which Epic acquired just last year — and also plans to spin off SuperAwesome which makes safe online experiences for kids. 37 | rd | It’s been 4 long years since the release of the Raspberry Pi 4, and, though there was speculation that its successor wouldn’t be available until later this year, if not next, the Raspberry Pi 5, along with its $60 starting price tag, is available for pre-order today and will be available for purchase by the end of next month. | https://www.theverge.com/2023/9/28/23889238/raspberry-pi-5-specs-availability-pricing
| sl | There are noticeable improvements made on the Raspberry Pi 5, including its 64-bit quad-core Arm Cortex-A76 processor that runs at 2.4GHz, allowing for a two to three times performance boost when compared to the Raspberry Pi 4. The device also comes with an 800MHz VideoCore VII graphics chip, two four-lane 1.5Gbps MIPI transceivers that let you connect up to two cameras or displays, and a single-lane PCI Express 2.0 interface offering support for “high-bandwidth peripherals.”, but you’ll still need a separate adapter, such as an M.2 HAT (Hardware Attached on Top) for you to take advantage of it. | https://www.raspberrypi.com/news/introducing-raspberry-pi-5/
| rd | The Raspberry Pi 5 also boasts dual 4Kp60 HDMI display outputs with support for HDR, a microSD slot, two USB 3.0 ports, two USB 2.0 ports, gigabit ethernet, a 5V DC power connection via USB-C, and Bluetooth 5.0 with Bluetooth Low Energy.

| sl | Earlier this month, scientists at Weizmann Institue in Israel published research in the journal Nature reporting the creation of an early human embryo using only stem cells and without the aid of sperm, egg or a womb. The team took adult human stem cells, collected from skin cells, and cultured them in their lab. The model resembles an embryo at day 14. The team's next goal is to achieve a model at 21 days of development with a 50% success rate. -0- So, Niki can you break this down for us? What is an embryo model and is it the same thing as an actual embryo? | https://www.bbc.com/news/health-66715669
| --- | https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-023-06604-5
| NA | Usually, for embryology research, donated embryos are used. However in this case, because this embryo is created in a lab from scratch, it is a model representing a human embryo. The endgoal for this type of technology is to eliminate that sample scarcity that comes with using donor tissue and, it may also reduce some ethical limitations.
| SL | -0- Is this the first time this has ever been done?
| -0- A short timeline: first model embryo developed from stem cells only, was made in mice in 2012. Then, the first human oocyte (egg cell) made from stem cells in vitro was in 2018. So this is the next logical step.
| SL | -0- Why is this such a big deal?
| NA | -0- This is a synthetic model that starts out as a handful of pluripotent stem cells, meaning they have the possibility to become almost any different type of cell. These specific cells are capable of self-assembling into an embryo model (post gastrulation, meaning the inner tube is already in place). At the oldest stage, 14 days, over four different cell types and layers have differentiated from these original hundred or so stem cells. This model showed key developmental stages in vitro that would normally be seen up to 14 days after a human egg cell or oocyte’s fertilization. So it is developing just like a human embryo would in utero, which is pretty incredible.
| -0- how does one make a synthetic embryo?
| -0- The interesting part of this paper to me is the way in which they achieved this. Of course it takes years of experimentation on mouse and then human cells to get to this point but they developed a kind of recipe of how many of each stem cell type they need to create a complete embryo. And I can share the recipe with you. Take 120 pluripotent stem cells from a human cell line and let them grow for three days. Continue the culture in an orbital shaker to maintain the morphology using ex-utero cell culture media. (aka secret sauce). After 8 days you will get a spherical structure with tissue compartments and self organization. By days 11-12 you gey fully differintiated cells forming structured tissue layers and expressing growth factors that make the cells move and change shape to form gastrulation, aka what will become the inside part of the human straw. The synthetic embryos are inspected microscopically at all of these stages and match the structure ans molecular properties of human embryos. The goal of this research is to better understand fertility and developmental defects. However this type of work is rife with ethical and technical challenges. Of course this study has a limiting factor, and that is a low success rate. In addition to requiring much more testing to see whether these embryo models can survive after 14 days. So as usual, a lot more work has to be done

| We asked for foldable laptop feedback and got a ton! Joshlama from Sydney Australia wrote in - "I can see some positives in having a foldable laptop for the use of web development or for IT administrative jobs where a vertical screen on the go may be preferred over a horizontal screen. Making the Keyboard/Mouse external could give a lot of flexibility, but then you’re carrying around extra peripherals. The closest contender to a foldable laptop on the market today would be the attempts to sell that a Mobile OS can do everything that a Desktop OS can do. Think Samsung DeX which turns your phone into a Chromebook-esque virtual machine with a dock, or iPadOS Split View. But at this time, we haven’t seen widespread attempts of that working. Developers have experimented to make the iPad Pro their main workstation have ran into issues with multitasking and working within the form factor. DeX hasn’t gotten a whole heap of attention since its launch in 2017. There’s something about the laptop form factor that makes it just work. That being said, I can’t justify the $4000 asking price." Andrew from Melbourne wrote: "Working in tech, I like using machines with large screen real-estate while also being portable. If they have a high viewing position then that's even better. I currently use a GPD WinMax 2 with a portable 16" external monitor when I'm on the go, but having a foldable portable external monitor that could be powered (and receive signal) via USB C displaying up to 30" would be ideal. It would fit in the backpack while folded and I'd have a beast that could be taken out when I need to do some real work (read play a few games away from home). "

| rd | Benjamin from Boone, Iowa wrote: "I am a mechanical keyboard enthusiast. I would love a foldable laptop that I could use without a built in keyboard and plug in my mechanical keyboard in instead provided there was more than one USB port. It would be a useful item. The price is way out of my price range, but it is a promising technology and I may buy one when the prices come down in future years. "

| rd | Researchers at Durham University in the UK released a study published in the Public Library of Science titled "Virtual first impressions: Zoom backgrounds affect judgements of trust and competence." The study compared how 167 adults judged pictures of Zoom participant's faces against different backgrounds. Each image featured a man or woman with a similing or neutral expression. The backgrounds tested were a blurred living space, houseplants, a bookcase, an empty wall, and a novelty image of a walrus. The faces placed against a houseplant or bookcase background were judged the most competent and trustworthy and faces over the novelty picture or living space were judged the least competent or trustworthy. The study also noted more research is needed to confirm these findings and if they apply across cultural contexts. All the particpant faces were of white individuals. | https://phys.org/news/2023-09-background.html
