| sl | E3 has been declared dead many times, but this time it looks like it's for real. The Entertainment Software Association made it official in a statement that said, "After more than two decades of E3, each one bigger than the last, the time has come to say goodbye." Show promoter ReedPop said the event, "did not garner the sustained interest necessary.” It is survived by Summer Game Fest. | https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2023/12/how-the-internet-killed-e3/
| tm | Customers in Kansas City, North Carolina's Triangle Region, Arizona, and Iowa can now sign up for 20 Gbps service from Google Fiber for installation after the first of the year. The service comes with WiFi 7 hardware with its “potential maximum” of nearly 5.8Gbps wireless service. The service will cost $250 a month. Google Fiber offers 5Gbps service in parts of Kansas City, West Des Moines, Iowa, Salt Lake City, and Huntsville, Alabama. It also offers 8 Gbps service in limited locations. | https://www.theverge.com/2023/12/11/23997336/google-fiber-20-gbps-speed-early-access-2024
| sl | A couple of Apple tidbits, according to Reuters, Apple has offered to let rival mobile payment operators access tap-and-go NFC technology in the iPhone and iPad to settle EU antitrust charges levied against the company last year. And as part of the tvOS 17.2 update, Apple made changes to the interface of its Apple TV app. A new sidebar int he Apple TV app now makes it easy to find non-Apple services like Max, Disney+ and others. Also the iTunes apps on iPad and iPhone as well as the TV Shows or Movies apps on Apple TV will now redirect you to the Apple TV app. The store tabs on the Apple TV app now lets you sign up for streaming services as well as rent and buy TV shows and movies. | https://www.engadget.com/apple-may-lift-nfc-restrictions-in-europe-to-escape-antitrust-fines-131004981.html

| tm | Google is saying goodbye to Google Play Movies and TV as it has already moved Android and iOS users to the Google TV app, removed the app from every Roku and most smart TVs, and pulled the app from Android TV in October. Although Google Play Movies and TV will be gone for good in January, you’ll still be able to access and watch all the shows and movies you've already purchased. | https://www.theverge.com/2023/12/11/23997066/google-play-movies-tv-app-removal
| sl | Updates to Google Maps now let you save your timeline- the encrypted record of where you've been- to your device instead of the cloud. Location History will now automatically delete your data after three months instead of 18 months. You can also now tap the blue dot not he map to bringing up location history options. And you can delete specific things from your location history like the research you did on my surprise party. 29 | tm | A jury in the US District Court in Northern California has found that Epic proved by the preponderance of the evidence that an antitrust market existed for Android app distribution and in-app billing, worldwide excluding China and that Google engaged in anticompetitive conduct. It also found that Epic was harmed by this conduct. The jury also found Google engaged in restraint of trade with its developer agreements, revenue sharing programs like Project Hug and the Games Velocity Program as well as OEM sales agreements. And it found that Google unlawfully tied the use of the Google Play Store to the use of Google Play Billing. | https://www.theverge.com/23994174/epic-google-trial-jury-verdict-monopoly-google-play
| Google chose a jury trial, different than Apple. - The jury determined that the marketplace was Android, so Apple's behaviors were irrelevant - The jury decision seems to hinge on the fact that Android is open but Google made it difficult to take advantage of that openness | https://finance.yahoo.com/news/google-epic-legal-defeat-threatens-060401137.html
| - Next step is the remediation part of the trial. Judge James Donato will meet with Gogoel and epic in the second week of Janaury to discuss remedies. - pic wants the court to give developers the freedom to introduce their own app stores and billing systems on Google's version of Android. Epic did not ask for monetary damages. - Google will appeal no matter what so this is not going to change anything anytime soon

| sl | It's that retrospective time of year, and today we're talking most downloaded iOS apps of 2023. Drumroll please...Apple announced today that Chinese e-commerce company Temu was the platform's most downloaded free app in the U.S. as measured by app installs. Chinese-based companies CapCut and TikTok, both made by ByteDance, came in at No. 3 and No. 5, respectively. So what about the incumbents? Last year, Meta's Whatsapp came in at No. 3, this year it slipped to #9. Instagram was No. 4 last year, this year is #6. Facebook didn't even make the top 10 this year, although Instagram Threads made it to the No. 3 spot. | https://techcrunch.com/2023/12/12/temu-was-the-most-downloaded-iphone-app-in-the-u-s-in-2023/

| tm | Google placed two in the top 10 but it was somewhat disappointing. YouTube fell from number two to number 8. Google Search, buoyed by Bard, was in front of YouTube at number 7. Gmail came in 10th. But data from Apptopia shows that Temu commanded an average of 18 minutes per day with US users… that's compared with 10 minutes in Amazon. Temu has a few tricks to keep folks engaged with in-app games to win rewards and coupons… and bargain prices for items and some time-based deals. The Temu app is available in more than 40 countries | https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2023-12-12/shoppers-spend-almost-twice-as-long-on-temu-app-than-rivals-like-amazon?sref=gni836kR

Followed Roblox, Call of Duty: Mobile, Subway Surfers, and Parking Jam 3D - Top paid game in the U.S. was Minecraft. Other top 10s included Heads Up!, Geometry Dash, Bloons TD 6, MONOPOLY, Papa’s Freezeria To Go!, Plague Inc., Red’s First Flight, Five Nights at Freddy’s and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. - Apple Arcade games doesn't feature top charts so subscription games aren't included in this list

| :17 | SEGMENT D - MAIN TOPIC
| tm | Today we are talking about GMO chickens, what is a GMO though?
| Let’s first define what GMO stands for: A Genetically Modified Organism is a plant, animal, or microbe, where a change has been made to its genome, usually with the use of genetic engineering. In that case, genes can be introduced, enhanced, or deleted within a species. Select breeding is also technically a form of genetic modification, where instead of adding or removing genetic material, it relies on the conscious selection and breeding for desired traits. So technically, your dogs and cats are GMOs.
| GMOs have been commonly used since the 1970s, from agriculture to pest eradication and research. Some key projects include: Bringing the American chesnut back from the brink of extinction, nutrient-enriched golden rice, malaria resistant mosquitoes, and now flu resistant chickens! | https://www.sciencenews.org/article/8-gmo-history-genetic-modification
| sl | But first, what is CRISPR?
| It stands for Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats. Not very helpful name but… it’s a technique used to selectively modify DNA strands, it's commonly known as “genetic scissors”. It was adapted for use in the laboratory from naturally occurring genome editing systems found in bacteria to protect against viruses. It earned the 2020 Nobel Prize in chemistry. Very basically, these repetitive CRISPR DNA sequences are transcribed to RNA which guides a protein to cut a target region where you can either remove it entirely or insert a new sequence in its stead.
| tm | So where do the chickens come in?
| After three decades of experimentation, scientists from the University of Edinburgh have successfully used the CRISPR gene editor to create chickens resistant to real-life doses of avian flu viruses. The researchers found the key gene to growing avian influenza in bird but not human cells, and they used CRISPR to introduce mutations into this specific gene, breeding chicks without the capacity of producing the protein that is co-opted by bird flu. When the researchers innoculated the chickens with bird flu they did not become infected, until they reached a dose about one thousand times higher than normal, which still progressed at a slower speed than normally, and the gene-edited birds were less likely to spread the virus. Viruses are tricky though, because they have such a high rate of mutation, they could change around these types of barriers, including the risk of becoming better adapted to transmit to mammals as well as birds. Using multiple gene edits would help restrict this risk. | https://www.science.org/content/article/proof-concept-crispr-engineered-chickens-shrug-flu
| sl | Is this dangerous to eat? Will they just be CRISPy-ER?
| Of course there will be a whole slew of regulatory controls before these birds reach market. Because the small gene edits made by CRISPR mimic mutants that already exist in nature, the regulatory barriers are slightly lower. But we have been eating selectively GMOd food since we invented plant domestication, and laboratory GMOd food since the 90s. Whether consumers will understand this and want to purchase this product is another hurdle most GMO food products arestill facing in stores today
| tm | Bonus question: what’s the most ridiculous GMO sticker you have ever seen?

| Cameron sent us a great email with lots of interesting thoughts about LLMs including his preferred metaphor for choosing a chatbot: "it's closer to how word processing works or filters in that in the future each big product will have it and will have advantages and disadvantages but it will be more about being an important feature to keep people in the product. Eg Google Drive can do word processing, Microsoft word online or locally installed can do word processings, but we expect them all to be about the same, until someone asks for something special."

| sl | Netflix released the first "Engagement report" that it plans to publish twice a year. The report this time details what people watched from January to June 2023. It shows hours watched, release date and indicates if it was available globally or not. Pretty simple. The most watched content in this report is season one of The Night Agent. It's a thriller about an FBI agent getting swept up into a conspiracy. It had 812 million hours viewed. Following that was Ginny & Georgia season 2 with 665.1 million hours then The Glory season one with 622.8 million and Wednesday season one with 507.7 million. Rounding out the top 5 is Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story at 503 million hours. But the list goes on for 18,000 titles. 97 | Boing Boing notes that we've now reached the stage in device nostalgia where Yamaha has felt it necessary to bring back the 5-disc CD changer. The Yamaha CD-C603 can hold up to 5 CDs and even lets you swap out the other four while one is playing. It only makes a couple concessions to this not being the 1990s. It has some smarts that shuts down the digital audio output and display to reduce noise. And it has a USB-A port for plugging in thumb drives full of MP3s, almost a retro move in and of itself. The Yamaha CD-C603 is $549 Dr. Niki. ESPN and others have been picking them up more regularly and while I'm biased, highlight reals have been catching on and going viral more often.
