| sl | OpenAI CEO Sam Altman posted on X that the company is pausing new paid subscriptions for ChatGPT Plus. Altman said that since its DevDay event, so many people signed up that OpenAI had exceeded capacity. You can sign up to be notified when subscriptions will reopen. OpenAI services had several outages last week, due to a combination of high demand and denial of service attacks. | https://www.searchenginejournal.com/openai-pauses-new-chatgpt-plus-subscriptions-due-to-surge-in-demand/501360/#close
| tm | Intel pushed microcode Tuesday to fix a high-severity bug described as a Redundant Prefix Issue and known as Reptar. The flaw resulted in unpredictable system performance including hangs, crashes and in some cases the possibility of privilege escalation. Of particular concern to cloud providers is that it could crash hypervisors, upon which they rely to provide machines in the cloud for clients. And virtually all modern Intel chips are affected. Alder Lake, Raptor Lake, and Sapphire Rapids received updated microcode before November with no detectable performance issues. Microcode has now been issued for all affected microprocessors. Users are advised to update BIOS, OS and drivers. | https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/security/new-reptar-cpu-flaw-impacts-intel-desktop-and-server-systems/
| sl | Meta wants adults - like parents and guardians- to be required to approve an app before someone under the age of 18 downloads it, and is calling for national US legislation to enforce it the same way throughout the country. Right now states all have differing and sometimes conflicting laws. The idea is that parents would verify their teen's age when they set up a new phone, so that all downloads after that point assume the teen's age is correct. Meta says currently parents need to navigate a variety of signup methods and provide "potentially sensitive identification information" for themselves and their teens "to apps with inconsistent security and privacy practices." | https://www.engadget.com/meta-calls-for-legislation-to-require-parental-approval-for-teens-app-downloads-171016744.html?src=rss
| tm | Google introduced a version of its Titan physical security key that works with passkeys. You can get it in either USB-C or USB-A and both have NFC. The keys can work as FIDO2 multi factor keys as usual but also store up to 250 passkeys. The models are available in the Google store and cost $30 for USB-A and $35 for USB-C. | https://www.theverge.com/2023/11/15/23962443/google-titan-security-key-passwordless-login
| sl | Google announced new features for its Maps service. You can now filter navigation options by length of trip, time spent walking, ETA, number of transfers and type of transit. Navigation to train stations will now include which side of the street is the best entrance to reach the platform going in the direction you need to go. You can now share lists with other users and vote on them with hearts or thumbs down. You can also respond to reviews on Google Maps with emojis, and create your own emojis with a generative model. | https://www.engadget.com/google-maps-adds-collaborative-lists-and-new-transit-search-customizations-140031424.html

| :05 | SEGMENT A | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
| sl | Lots of announcements at Microsoft Ignite, let's go over some of the more significant ones.
| tm | Bing Chat has been renamed Microsoft Copilot and will remain free. It will also still be available in Bing, and Windows 11 at and at a new URL, copilot.microsoft.com. There was already a paid version of Microsoft Copilot for Microsoft 365 which is now renamed Copilot for Microsoft 365. | https://copilot.microsoft.com
| sl | CoPilot Studio is a no-code tool, so you can customize the aforementioned paid Copilot for Microsoft 365, as well as integrate custom ChatGPT chatbots. Microsoft's Jared Spataro said, "you can use natural language to describe what you want — and Copilot Studio will help you build and iterate the conversation design.” Anything from a web page to quarterly reports. | https://www.theverge.com/2023/11/15/23960417/microsoft-copilot-ai-studio-custom-gpts-chatgpt-openai
| tm | Windows AI Studio lets you access tools and models form multiple services including Azure and Hugging Face. You can fine tune Small Language Models (SLM). And if you want to do Large Language Models, Nvidia updated TensorRT-LLM to run on GeForce RTX 30 and 40 Series GPUs with 8GB of RAM or more. | https://www.theverge.com/2023/11/15/23960471/microsoft-windows-ai-studio-nvidia-developers
| sl | Azure AI Speech text to speech avatar lets you upload images of a person to be created into an avatar you can then make talk. The speech generator can also be trained on the person's voice if you wish. It's in public preview now. Most customers won't be able to do the customization though they'll use pre-provided avatars and voices. Customization is limited to certain use cases. And then there's Personal Voice, which uses one minute of speech to synthesize a voice which can then be used for dubbing, translation, and narration. Users must give explicit consent in the form of a recorded statement before the voice can be used for training. And customers must agree NOT to use the voice for user-generated or open-ended content. | https://techcrunch.com/2023/11/15/microsoft-launches-a-deepfakes-creator/
| tm | Teams gets regenerative backgrounds and voice isolation. The Mesh mixed reality platform will integrate into Teams in January for 3D virtual meetings. No headset required, though you can use one if you want. It works with the Quest 3. Non-headset wearing members appear as a webcam window in the 3D environment. | https://www.theverge.com/2023/11/15/23960720/microsoft-teams-microsoft-mesh-immersive-meetings-january-2024-launch
| sl | Microsoft To Do, Microsoft Planner, and Microsoft Project for the web will be combined under the Microsoft Planner name in Teams starting in spring 2024. Existing apps and web will be renamed Planner. | https://www.theverge.com/2023/11/15/23962052/microsoft-planner-task-management-announcement-date-ignite
| tm | Microsoft announced the Azure Maia 100 AI Accelerator and the Azure Cobalt 100 CPUs. Maia can train models, Cobalt can run them. Rolling out to data centers early next year. Maia 100 - 5-nanometer chip with 105 billion transistors. Designed specifically for Azure stack. Will power Microsoft services but not be available to public cloud customers yet. Did not detail architecture or submit to public benchmarks. Had to build custom data racks to acommodate cabling and liquid-based cooling. The chips use a higher than usual amount of power. Cobalt 100 is more energy efficient. It's a 128-core chip built on the Arm Neoverse CSS architecture. This is a trend. Amazon's Graviton3E inference chip is Arm and Google is supposedly developing one on Arm too. Cobalt will power new VMs for customers int he coming year. | https://techcrunch.com/2023/11/15/microsoft-looks-to-free-itself-from-gpu-shackles-by-designing-custom-ai-chips/

| sl | Scientists published a study in the journal Psychological Science on Monday, focusing on how convincing generated images were. The study used the term "hyperrealism" to describe a phenomena where people believed generated images of human faces were more likely to be real than actual images of human faces. The images were generated by the 2020 Nvidia StyleGAN2 generator. In order to identify bias, only white adults participated in the study. When shown images of white faces they identified 66% of generated images as real compared to 51% of real images. Images of non-white faces were identified as real 51% of the time whether generated or not. A reminder that the particpants identifying the images were all white. The study did not include non-white participants. | https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2023/11/people-think-white-ai-generated-faces-are-more-real-than-actual-photos-study-says/

| tm | Scientists at DeepMind published a paper in the journal Science Tuesday showing that one of their models called GraphCast outperformed existing weather forecasting models in predicting global conditions up to 10 days in advance in less than one minute. GraphCast outperformed the leading system, the ECMWF or European Centre for Medium-range Weather Forecasts, in 90% of 1,380 metrics and on events in the troposphere, the lower part of the atmosphere that affects most weather we feel, it reached 99%. That included temperature, wind speed and direction, humidity and pressure. GraphCast uses a machine learning architecture called a "graph neural network," trained on more than four decades of ECMWF data. GraphCast also uses less energy. GraphCast works well globally, especially for things like major storms, but does not perform well on smaller-scale forecasts like amount of rain in a given location, so is seen as complementary to current local forecasting methods. | https://arstechnica.com/science/2023/11/ai-outperforms-conventional-weather-forecasting-for-the-first-time-google-study/

| NOTES - Extreme temperatures - path of cyclones - GraphCast accurately predicted that Hurricane Lee would make landfall in Nova Scotia nine days in advance beating traditional tools by 3 days. "At each grid point, the model predicts the temperature, wind speed and direction, and mean sea-level pressure, as well as other conditions like humidity. The neural network is then able to find patterns and draw conclusions about what will happen next for each of these data points. " - Huawei’s Pangu-Weather and Nvidia’s FourcastNe - ECMWF is using Graphcast and developing its own version - Google DeepMind is also making GraphCast open source. - It did not outperform conventional models in all scenarios, such as the sudden intensification of Hurricane Otis,

| Bill wrote in about our Playstation Portal discussion from yesterday - I've had my PS5 since launch and it resides next to my OLED in my basement movie room. The main room that my wife and I "live" in is in our living room upstairs. After work, supper, and working out, the only time we really have to sit and be around each other is for a couple of hours in the evening. Could I escape to my beautiful OLED downstairs for some gaming only to come back up when it's time for bed? Sure, but sometimes I'd like to stay upstairs so we can have conversations while we watch Eurotrip for the 20th time while I remote play on my laptop. The laptop works fine, but due to an issue with the wifi card, I'm stuck at 30fps with some packet drops every 5-10 minutes. I also have to be aware of any kind of pressure being put on the laptop's USB port. The Portal solves all of this for me. I can easily play something while lying in bed, sitting on the couch, and as long as it works like the Playstation Remote Play app, it'll also work outside of my house as long as it has an internet connection. I'm planning on getting the Portal once it's been out for a while.
