19		sl	YouTube is making a push into gaming, giving its Premium users access to a set of online games known as Playables that can be directly played on both the mobile and desktop apps. Playables launched in September to select users but an email started circulating to YouTube Premium subscribers last week notifying those who opt-in that they can start playing a total of 37 mini-games that effectively live inside YouTube.	https://www.theverge.com/2023/11/27/23978515/youtube-playables-games-premium-subscribers
20		tm	Scientists at the Oxford Internet Institute studied the internet use of 2.4 million people aged 15-89 across 168 countries to see how it harmed their mental health. They published their findings in a paper called “Global Well-Being and Mental Health in the Internet Age” in the journal Clinical Psychological Science on Tuesday. They found “Our results do not provide evidence supporting the view that the Internet and technologies enabled by it, such as smartphones with Internet access, are actively promoting or harming either wellbeing or mental health globally.” According to Ars Technica, one of the co-authors of the study, said, "If you really want an answer to this question, you have to hit pause on implementing your random idea you think is going to save young people. 22		sl	Ikea announced three new smart home sensors. The Parasoll door and window sensor can tell when a door or window opens or closes and can pair with an Ikea smart bulb. The Vallhorn wireless motion sensor can activate a light when it detects motion. And the Barding water sensor can send a mobile notification and trigger an alarm if it detects a leak. All three sensors are less than ten euros. 23		tm	Finland's Varjo launched a new mixed reality headset Tuesday called the XR-4. It's meant for business use like a pilot training for a defense contractor or a surveyor mapping a construction site. It has two 4K displays with a brighter and wider field of view than previous Varjo headsets. It uses two 20-megapixel cameras for pass-through video to augmented reality. It uses laser scanning to detect surfaces. And it comes with noise-canceling mics (good for those construction sites) and integrated speakers. 24		sl	Google partnered with clean energy startup Fervo, to bring Fervo's first-of-a-kind geothermal energy plant online in Nevada using new tech for harnessing geothermal power. 30		sl	Amazon's palm scanning service, Amazon One Enterprise, is now available to companies. So instead of keycards, hand scans. It can also replace fobs and passwords. IHG Hotels & Resorts, turnstile manufacturer Boon Edam, and elevator and escalator provider Kone have all signed up as customers. 32		tm	Amazon is also following the trend of designing its own chips for model training and inferencing, aka, AI. Model training is where you get the model to know how to do the thing. Inferencing is when you use it to do the thing. Here are the two chips Amazon announced that will be available in AWS elastic compute or EC service. - AWS Trainium2 promises 4 times better performance and twice the energy efficiency of the first gen. It will be available for EC customers in clusters of 16 up to 100,000. 100,000 chips can train a 300-billion parameter AI large language model in a few weeks, when it takes months now. That's about 1.5 times the size of GPT-3. Those are coming sometime in 2024. Amazon didn't give a date. - The Arm-based Graviton4 is meant specifically for inferencing - aka running data through an already trained model. This one promises 30% better performance than the Graviton3. Amazon says all hardware interfaces are encrypted. 38		sl	According to Ofcom’s latest study of AI use in the UK, pretty unsurprisingly teenagers and children embrace generative AI for daily life more than adults do. This includes using services like ChatGPT, Snapchat My AI, Midjourney, Bing chat, and DALL-E. 79% of polled teenagers ages 13-17 say they use generative AI tools and services, with 40% of polled kids between ages 7-12 doing the same. Anyone polled above 16 years old is where the number drops further - with only 31% saying they use AI tools. 69% of that same age group say they've never used an AI tool, and 24% say they don't even know what it is.	https://www.ofcom.org.uk/news-centre/2023/gen-z-driving-early-adoption-of-gen-ai
39		tm	Snapchat My AI is the most popular generative AI tool among children and teens, used by half!!!! of online 7–17-year-olds, with 75% of those being female. ChatGPT is the big one for anyone over 16 - 23%. For anyone 7-17, boys use ChatGPT more than girls.

I have decades of experience, I drive slow because I understand that even $100K all wheel drive adventure vehicle doesn't come with a special suspension of the laws of physics where friction and tires and braking are concerned... and I buy the best winter tires I can afford because a firefighting friend that teaches winter driving taught me that proper winter tires will embarrass a four wheel drive truck on slick roads.-

77			Phil also wrote on Patreon - Here in Sweden where thanksgiving isn't a thing at all, but for some reason the sales are, a lot of shops have just been calling it Black Week, as they last much longer than a day and there is no association with Fridays at all.

79		tm	Jeremiah wrote in about video conferencing research: "Since the pandemic, a large number of gamers who play Dungeons and Dragons or a range of other Tabletop Role Playing games have moved to doing them over video conferencing. A lot of folks playing on Discord, Google Meet, ect... I wonder what it would look like if they included that sort of activity in future research, as it is not a thing you would think of as "work." From my own observation, I can say sessions may have fallen in time from the average 4 hours for in person games to 3 hours, but I can't say that is necessarily due to fatigue. Ps. There is a lot of tech involved in Ttrpg gaming these days due to the move more remote play. Lots of specialty tools and the like."

PopSci editor Purbita Saha told The Verge she’s “frustrated, incensed, and appalled that the owners shut down a pioneering publication that’s adapted to 151 years worth of changes in the space of a five-minute Zoom call.” NOTES PopSci's Communications director Cathy Hebert told the Verge, "A combination of its news team, along with commerce, video, and other initiatives, will produce content that naturally aligns with PopSci’s mission.” PopSci has around 5 editorial staff members and a few workers on the commerce team.
