My co-authorship of Grenzenlos Deutsch is motivated by my commitment to increasing social justice in language education. Offering an OER with quality content and current modern languages pedagogy, including universal design for learning, increases access to teaching and learning German for all students and their educators. Members of the Grenzenlos Deutsch team reflect on their shared goals and values in an article on feminist collaborative work published in Feminist German Studies, vol. 36.1, Spring/Summer 2020. As we gather authentic resources for the project, we are intentional about including images, voices, texts, and contexts that reflect the diversity of the target culture. We offer content frequently underrepresented in traditional textbooks, such as units on environmental issues, or units dedicated to diversity, equity, and social justice. We offer structure and flexibility. Grenzenlos Deutsch is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International License. This means that educators and learners can adapt and adjust our content and methods to best fit their own teaching and learning contexts. At the same time, the curriculum consistently cycles through thematic units, introduces and reviews grammar structures, supports building proficiencies, and motivates self-directed learning. Our team uses WordPress and HTML5 tools to develop learner-centered activities that engage individuals and groups in active learning scenarios. The Grenzenlos Deutsch website is accessible via grenzenlos-deutsch.com.
