12 | Due to the high cost of books for this class, I decided to create my own materials to fully cover the curriculum for SPN 101A Elementary Spanish 1 for the Health Professions online, a 3-credit course taught at North Shore Community College during the fall, spring and summer. The curriculum for this course covers the same grammar points as PN 101 Elementary Spanish 1; the vocabulary however focuses on the health care field. This is important since students can enroll in SPN 102 Elementary Spanish 2 if they wish to further their studies in the language. The materials consist of a book with six lessons, a website, interactive flashcards (Anki), and assignments, quizzes, and tests that reside in Blackboard. In the book, each lesson is divided in two sections (1) grammar, (2) a specialized vocabulary. Each lesson presents up-to-date information in the form of “cultural notes” that highlight Hispanic customs and traditions relevant to healthcare. The book can be downloaded from Blackboard as a PDF for free or it can be bought online for around $10. The easy-to-follow website created in Google Site includes dialogs and vocabulary with corresponding audio files that students use to study and practice pronunciation. Students can also download the interactive flashcards (Anki) that serve the same purpose. The website gives access to grammar video tutorials; students can chose to learn grammar from the lessons or from the YouTube videos or both.
