35 | After Action Report: Take-off in the soup was dicey, but Skipper got the squadron formed up behind us. He was proud to lead the 80th to the target. Three 109s got past our cover not long after landfall. Two of them were dealt with by our gunners, but one diving on us scored hits. He was obviously a very skilled pilot as his fire was accurate, seriously wounding our pilot and co-pilot and knocking out the Norden as well as the O2 and heat in several positions. Having washed out of flight school, I took the pilot's seat as we hit the IP and had the crew move the seriously wounded out of the cockpit. Bombs were toggled when the rest of the squadron dropped, but I doubt we hit anything. Turning away from the target, we were bounced by some Eyetie fighters. Only one got past our cover, and our Ball gunner flamed him. Departing the target, I began descending to 10,000', notifying the squadron so that someone else should take over the lead. I also had our Engineer move into the right seat, and shuffled the gunners to maximize our defensive fire. Crossing the coastline, we got hit by four Focke Wulfs with no fighter cover. We exchanged fire, scoring hits as did they, but we didn't take any terminal damage before they left us. By the grace of God, inspite of the weather, and with lots of help from the control tower, we managed to land in one piece. Respectfully Submitted, 2ndLt E Black | |||||||
