37 | After Action Report: Take-off and forming up was routine. Once over the sea, we were attacked by an Italian a/c, which was driven off by my gunners. Approaching the target, enemy activity picked up. Bombs were dropped on our formation by German twin engine fighters to no effect. An FW-190 evaded the excellent top cover provided by the Brits and got some ineffectual hits on us. Coming around from our 9, my gunners lit him up and he exploded. A rocket fired from our 6 exploded off our starboard side and we felt something hit our a/c, but everything continued to function with no ill effect. Flak over the target was accurate, and while we heard the hail hitting us, we experienced no significant damage. More Italian SSFs were driven off by the Spits as we turned for home, except one who got through. Attacking from our 6, his tail clipped our a/c, damaging our tail wheel and near giving our tail gunner a heart attack as well as a minor wound to his foot. The return flight was uneventful although our landing required extra attention with the damaged tail wheel. I had my rear gunners move forward before landing to be safe, but in the end we mostly removed some paint from the lower, rear fuselage. Chief Carter says his crew will have everything fixed up overnight. The Doc says Sgt Wilson is Fit for Duty. Respectfully Submitted, 2ndLt Ben Willis | |||||||
