2 | This course introduces various common hand tools and power tools used in construction, some of the key features of each that help them function, and some tasks in building that they are designed for. Students will become familiar with the terms used to identify the parts and types of various hand and power tools. Some information about safety and use will be included. This course also covers the basics of hammers as useful tools for assembling and disassembling materials. Different hammer types and their specific features and uses will be explained. Students will become familiar with the parts, operation, and techniques to be effective with hammers. Also included in this course are the parts, types, and use of cordless drills and their function as a portable power tool for drilling holes and driving fasteners. The materials cover the basic features of a cordless drill, how these features affect the way it operates, as well as practice driving fasteners and drilling holes. Impact drivers are also covered. This course covers general information about wood-based building materials used in construction. Characteristics of lumber and the defects that can exist will be explained. Information on how to identify, name, and determine the nominal and actual dimensions of stock lumber sizes will be included. Sheet goods, their dimensions, and the common materials they are made of will also be covered. Stranded and laminated engineered lumber and sheet goods will be introduced and examples of each will be explained as well as applications of each. This course also covers general information about common fasteners used in construction. Basic parts and characteristics of screws and nails will be explained and how their features affect the way they perform. | |||||
