36 | - It was uneventful until we crossed the shoreline and got bounced by a couple of 190s that got past the Brits. One coming in from 6 high was claimed by my gunners. The second FW dove on us scored a few ineffectual hits. He swung round attacking from our 10 and was blown up by our fire. They were followed by 109s, two getting past the Hurricanes. On their first pass one missed us and the other was forced to bail out. On his second pass we swapped lead with little effect. On his third pass, the highly skilled pilot hit us hard. Jonesy took some shrapnel to his leg, a fuel tank start to spew fuel but fortunately sealed, and holes appeared in the sheet metal around my left leg. The worst of it was Sgt Dell who took a 7.92 round in the chest. Fortunately, his flak jacket stopped the shell, but he was spitting a bit of blood. - The flak was deadly accurate and we got peppered, but fortunately it all seemed to be sheet metal damage. With decent visibility Lt Jones was confident we had a good drop. Flak continued to be accurate on egress, punching a big hole in our starboard wing. - Back over the water, we got hit by a 109 and two more 190s. Leroy in the tail knocked down the 109, one 190 took hits and disappeared, the other 190 did us some damage including knocking out my O2. Coming around again he took more hits and passed under us. - Without oxygen, I was forced to reduce altitude after informing the squadron we were vacating the Tail End spot. - With our coast in sight, we got bounced by 4 FWs, although a P-47 happened by and took one out. The quality of enemy pilots was significantly better than we'd seen before, and they put a lot of lead into Betty Anne. Vern also had his flak jacket stop a shell, but he seemed in worse shape than Dell. We took a lot of hits and our a/c was starting to look like a sieve, but no critical damage so far. However, on his next pass by the FW-190 started a fire in #4 and we discovered our extinguisher system had been knocked out. Since we were already at low altitude, and with two SW crewmen and unable to bail out, I decided to attempt a water landing. | |||||||
