6 | Motherboard reports it's obtained a document showing that California's Department of Motor Vehicles is making $50,000,000 a year by selling drivers’ personal information. DMVs across the US are reportedly selling data that drivers have to share in order to get a license, such as names, physical addresses, and car registration info. In a public record acts request, Motherboard asked the California DMV for the finiancial details of commercial data requesters over the past six years, which it did, although it didn't name the requesters. | |||||
7 | MediaTek formally revealed its previously-teased 5G system-on-chip, now called the Dimensity 1000, touted as the first SoC to support 5G on two SIMs, which would offer two lines that support for 4.7Gbps downstream and 2.5Gbps upstream on sub-6GHz 5G networks. WiFi 6 and Bluetooth 5.1+ are supported, too. The Dimensity 1000 also claims four ARM Cortex-A77 high-performance cores, four low-power Cortex-A55 cores and a new AI unit that's twice as fast as the prior generation. The first phones using Dimensity 1000 chips should arrive in the first quarter of 2020. | |||||
8 | Tesla’s Cybertruck unveil last week included designer Franz von Holzhausen successfully smashing two of the vehicle’s “armor glass” windows onstage with a metal ball. Now we know why the glass broke. 9 | Facebook is offering a new market research app called Viewpoints that pays US users to complete surveys, research and other tasks that will help the company enhance its products. Points are earned and then you automatically receive PayPal money when you reach point milestones. You have to be at least 18 years old to use Viewpoints, and Facebook says it won't sell data to third parties or publicly share your activity without permission. | |||||
10 | Finland’s Salcomp which supplies iPhone chargers to Apple, is investing 20 billion rupees ($278.67 million) in Chennai, India, to make mobile chargers and other smartphone components starting in March 2020. The facility was formerly owned by Nokia. 12 | The South China Morning Post reports that in October, China's government removed cryptocurrency mining from a list of activities set for elimination at the end of next year. This came after China's President Xi Jinping publicly endorsed blockchain. Operating cryptocurrency exchanges are banned in China but mining is not and Chinese miners make up about 70% of global cryptocurrency mining operations. India is number two at 4 percent and the US number three at 1 percent. 13 | Souces tell Bloomberg that Intel hired a financial adviser for a potential sale of its home connectivity unit, which makes chips for home internet gear like routers and gateways and sees annual sales around $450M. You might recall back in July, Intel sold its smartphone modem business to Apple for $1B. | |||||
14 | Gizmodo reports that Amaon's fulfillment center on New York's Staten Island, which opened in September 2018, has worker injury rates, known as JFK8, that are over three times the industry average. The source of this data is the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) 300 and 300a forms. The nonprofit organization New York Committee for Occupational Safety and Health said in a statement that “The Amazon SI facility injury and illness rate is [...] a stunning 3 times as high as the average for all other warehouses nationwide." Amazon responded that this was “an example of selective data skewed to support false statements by an organization that’s sole business objective is to misinform the public on Amazon’s safety record.” | |||||
