17 | tm | Last month a leaked paper from Google indicated the company's quantum computer had achieved quantum supremacy, meaning it could perform a calculation-- in this case q technique for determining random numbers-- in a reasonable amount of time, that a classical computer could not. However IBM researchers have proposed a method in which a classical computer could achieve that calculation in a practical amount of time. IBM's method would require using hard drive space in addition to RAM and other optimizations to perform the calculation in 2.5 days, rather than the 10,000 years Google's method would have required. | https://www.technologyreview.com/s/614604/quantum-supremacy-from-google-not-so-fast-says-ibm/

A Privacy protections report shows users how many trackers, fingerprints and crypto miners it has blocked. Firefox's password management service, Lockwise now has a password generator and works with Firefox Monitor to alert you if one of your accounts may have been involved in a breach. The green lock icon is now gray and insecure http and ftp connections show a red crosscut logo. Firefox 70 also strips path information from the HTTP referrer sent to trackers. 23 | :42 | pb | Google Fi connects to three LTE providers, Sprint, T-Mobile and US Cellular, depending which one it thinks is fastest. Up until now, it had to disconnect briefly to switch. Starting with the Pixel 4, A new feature called "Dual Connect" will let Google Fi make the switch without the disconnect, claiming you could watch a video during the switch and not see a blip. Google uses Dual SIM Dual Standby -- aka DSDS-- to have two connections happen at once, both to Google FI. So you'll need a physical Fi SIM card along with the eSIM in your Pixel 4. The feature will roll out to Pixel 4s over the next few weeks and eventually come to other Fi-compatible phones. | https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2019/10/google-fi-will-soon-connect-you-to-two-lte-networks-at-once/

47 | Johannes on Tom wondering why Amazon does not vet updates to Alex’s Skills or says clearly that they do it now. The situation is a little more complicated: Alexa Skills are made up out of two parts: the voice model, so called intents and utterances. These are stored on Amazons Servers and every change to them is vetted. They are necessary for Alexa to understand what you are saying and figure out where to route your request. The other part of the skill is the actual backend that handles the request coming in from Alexa. That part is stored on your servers, which could be on AWS, but they don’t have to be. Think of it as a Webservice. It has a defined interface that Alexa will trigger, but you can change the logic behind it at any time without anyone knowing. I‘m not saying that that is a good thing or defending Amazon. But in the current Setup and the way Skills currently work Amazon can not detect nor vet changes to the Webservice. We run some of the biggest Alexa Skills in Germany. So if you need more input or have questions, feel free to hit me up. | <-- Hold for tomorrow
