20 | :33 | sl | Google paused the rollout of Chrome 79 on Android following reports of missing data for apps that use Android's built-in WebView. Chrome 79 changes where web data is stored, but didn't properly migrate data from localStorage and WebSQL. As a result, some apps and sites do not show local data, which isn't deleted, just inaccessible after the update. Google confirmed the bug and is working on a fix which it says may take a week. | https://www.androidpolice.com/2019/12/15/google-pauses-chrome-79-rollout-on-android-after-bug-wipes-data-in-some-apps/

24 | :45 | sl | Jia Tolentino at the New Yorker wrote a detailed account of what she dubs "the Instagram face", a real-life version of a filtered person based on cosmetic surgery. Tolentino describes it as a young face with no pores, high cheekbones, catlike eyes and long lashes. The nose is small and the lips are full. She says it looks like "a direct descendant of Kim Kardashian West, Bella Hadid, Emily Ratajkowski, and Kendall Jenner." Tolentino met with multiple plastic surgeons in LA to get price quotes and suggestions, and walked away despondent that this is our new normal. | https://www.newyorker.com/culture/decade-in-review/the-age-of-instagram-face
25 | :50 | tm | Freelance journalist Martha Pskowski posted at Medium's OneZero about delivery drivers in Mexico for companies like Didi, Uber, Sin Delantal and Rappi, who use WhatsApp groups and Google Maps to help each other stay safe in high crime neighborhoods. While companies offer support hotlines and sometimes insurance, workers don't feel they are always taken seriously so have started to rely on each other. The workers comment crashes, injuries, harassment and robberies among other things. WhatsApp helps them monitor each other and Google Maps marks locations of past robberies and addresses to avoid. A group called "Ni un repartidor menos" has almost 1,000 members across four different WhatsApp groups. They also use a Google Doc to share contact info and receive a registry number that they write on backpacks for identification. | https://onezero.medium.com/uber-delivery-workers-in-mexico-track-thieves-through-a-secret-whatsapp-network-d5795a0e3b41 | [[In October, Google reported that, in the past year, it had removed 160,000 pieces of content for containing violent extremism from Blogger, Google Photos, and Google Drive alone — about 438 per day.]]

42 | Hey DTNS Gang, There was talk of VPNs on Friday's show, so I just wanted to remind users of Google FI that you have a free VPN built right into the service - you just need to turn it on. It's worked great for me from day one. If you're worried about using Google as your VPN provider, Google says they don't store data going through the VPN, but it may use the metadata to improve their service. The Verge has more information at this link: Surf safe and have a great Holiday!, -Chris | https://www.theverge.com/2018/11/13/18089834/project-fi-enhanced-network-vpn-privacy-google-announcement.
